Meet Adrienne DeLoe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne DeLoe.

Adrienne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I create nature and environmental themed artwork. I really can’t remember a time when I wasn’t making nature-themed artwork. I started making as a young child, picking flowers and other plants from our yard and using their pigments as paint. I have been an artist all of my life and I have never wanted to be anything other than an artist. In addition to being a fine artist, I also own Winter Garden Studios, Handmade Botanical Jewelry.

I grew up in Colorado and that has had a big influence on my work. I spent a lot of time hiking and backpacking in the Colorado Mountains as a child. Spending that much time in nature gave me a deep appreciation for the beauty that it provides. We had a beautiful garden as I was growing up and my parents gave me my own little plot of land to grow things on. Art and nature have been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I always knew I wanted to be an artist and to own a business. Creating my own career hasn’t always been easy, mostly because of the serious time and commitment it takes to be out on your own. I always had my goals in mind and have been relentless in my pursuit of working for myself. All of the challenges have to lead to me to where I am today and I am definitely thankful for that.

We’d love to hear more about your artwork.
My artwork consists of ethically sourced animal bones and insects, seed pods and other plant materials, paint, and clay. I am a mixed media artist, working in both 2D and 3D. I choose to use elements from nature as my medium because it provides me with endless inspiration. Nature itself gives me my supplies and my ideas. My work is my homage to the beauty of nature.

By altering skulls, insects and other objects, I aim to call attention to the way that human beings are altering the environment. I am deeply concerned about the future of our planet and I hope that my work is a reminder of how beautiful nature is, but also that we must take care of it in order to survive. If we don’t have air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat and a space to do it in, then all of the struggles and conflict we go through is for nothing.

I also create botanical jewelry handmade from real pressed flowers and leaves. My business is Winter Garden Studios, which I have owned for almost 10 years.

What were you like growing up?
I was an incredibly shy child. I was, and still, am a voracious reader. I preferred to spend time doing quiet activities like reading or working on art. I think that quiet alone time fed my imagination and led me to be the creative person I am today.
