Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahmad Ghoniem.
Ahmad, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started making music in 2014 with my roommate while attending UCDenver. At first, I was just trying to be a “rapper” and have fun with it. After 2015, one of the most difficult years of my life, I started to see how making music can be a form of therapy for me. Since then, I’ve tried to only make music that has authentic expression and a good message. Fast forward to February 2019, I flew out to my home country of Egypt to film a music video with my childhood friend Yassin Koptan.
The goal was to shoot one video but Yassin, the ambitious guy that he is, said we should shoot three full videos instead. We only had a seven day window to get it all done. It didn’t seem possible, but with the help of an amazing team and a lot of determination, we managed to get all the shots we needed, finishing our last shoot just three hours before my flight back to the States. On August 16th, we released Papa Told Me and in just one month it garnered over 600,000 views online, exceeding all our expectations. The next video is scheduled to be released in October.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had a lot of voices, including my own, telling me that I’m not doing what I’m supposed to. People tend to just look at the surface and dismiss me as another white guy trying to rap. I’ve always felt like I had to prove myself in that way. But no matter the road you take in life, there will always be highs & lows; everyone chasing a career in music will more than likely face many setbacks, discouragement and struggles. I’ve learned to just keep my head up and focus on the positive.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
4N The human represents the humanization of foreign experience. Growing up in Egypt, I was an American kid, once I got to America, I was the Egyptian kid. In most of my friend groups and even in my own family, I was always the odd one out. That’s why I want to make music for people that feel left out, people struggling to fit in and hopefully help them embrace their individuality. Over the past year, I came to the conclusion that I just want to add value to people’s lives and work every day to better myself. Majority of the music I write nowadays is about life, self love and self improvement. My main goal with my business and my life is to leave a positive impact on this world.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Releasing my debut music video for Papa Told Me. It looks all professional, but in reality, it was just my homies and me doing it ourselves. Everything about it was DIY and I couldn’t be more proud of it.
