Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Folk.
Alexis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a mom and I remember people saying “that’s not going to pay the bills”. They weren’t wrong, I am a mama to three kiddos and kids aren’t cheap but as I became a mom, I became more and more nostalgic and sentimental, realizing that growing up I have photos of everything over the course of my life. Getting a new camera was always something I saved up for growing up I then realized that photography was a huge passion of mine. I loved taking pictures because I could always revisit those moments and relive those memories. When I was pregnant with my first, getting a little Canon Rebel t5i that I attempted my own maternity photos and newborn photos on, over the years obsessively taking photos of my kids, dog and husband on.
In 2017, I decided to try my eye at taking photos of other people’s families. I remember driving home after my first ‘shoot’ feeling like that was what I wanted to do the rest of my life. I upgraded my gear and researched all that I needed to make sure I was legit, quickly realizing how much work it is to run your own business but while it hasn’t always been rainbows and butterflies, it’s been so worth it! I had no desire to be a wedding photographer initially, however once I photographed a family that I’ve captured growing from three to four, to their proposal; when they asked me to photograph their wedding, I knew I had to be there for those moments too. I’ve now had the honor to capture couples and families at different stages and milestones in their lives I am in awe that this is my job every day. Not only does photography allow me to be at home with my kids and actively be a part of their lives, it also helps provide for them and for that I am so grateful that I’m able to show my daughters that their job can be something they genuinely love like I do mine.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing worth having comes easy, I truly believe that. I will admit that in the beginning I was totally naïve in all the start-up costs and the annual fees that come with owning a business, how important budgeting is with photography, my income is by no means stable in comparison to other jobs out there.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
