Meet Alison Stern of Alison Blair Studio in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison stern.

Alison, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up under the watch of large, mysterious abstract canvases painted in ethereal, alluring color combinations like aubergine and golden flax, sienna and cerulean. The smell of oil paint and the tacky feel of a drying palette piqued my senses. These are the nostalgic touch points of my childhood. My father was a fine artist and our cedar-paneled basement was where he spun his art and where my inspiration began.

It took many years – 30-some – for the creativity he passed on to me, to manifest in what is now my alter ego: Alison Blair Studio Jewelry Designs. My father’s mantra: “Simplicity is the key to beauty” guides my hand as I etch, saw, solder, and form sterling silver and 14KT gold into unique and lovely metal works.

Less is more as I embrace a minimalist, clean aesthetic in my mountain and moon pendants, raw-diamond rings, and hammered organic earrings. My delicate designs are understated, allowing each piece to express its beauty through its simplicity.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been an informative journey for me. Over the past 18 years, my goals have shifted in ways that I would not have expected. I had thought that I wanted to grow my small business into a self-sustaining wholesale business, but what I found was that I missed the direct interaction with my customers. Now I focus on custom orders, creating one of a kind jewelry.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My jewelry designs are very delicate and simple. I find that is what makes Alison Blair Studio unique. Finding that moment when the piece is finished and not overworking it is the most challenging lesson for me. That’s what sets me apart from my peers-creating really small but meaningful designs that are relatable. I think I’m most proud of my growth as a jeweler. I had developed a strong business hand-knotting gemstones on silk cord. I was in more than 70 shops nationally but I had no time to develop my trade. So I put my business on hold and took a metalsmithing class. I was hooked from the first time I lit the torch!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think I would have explored my artistic side more seriously when I was in college. Although I am always learning new metalsmithing skills I wish I had some formal education in the field.
