Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Gunberg.
Alissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up locally and graduated from Bear Creek High School in 2009. I packed up my bags and headed to the University of Oregon, where I began my undergraduate degree in exterior design. With the heartbreaking loss of my mother in early 2011, my entire world changed! My mind state shifted, and I decided to pursue a Sociology degree with a focus on Family Services. After graduating in 2013, I moved back to Colorado and got a job in my field. A daunting and exhausting two years went by and showed me that I was certainly not following my dreams.
In 2015, I got a job at Land Title Guarantee Company. I worked my way up to a closer’s assistant and started learning the ropes of real estate! I reviewed contracts all day long and actually had the opportunity to view real estate from a neutral perspective. I learned how to referee a transaction and not upset anyone along the way. 🙂 This was a really exciting time for me because I could feel that *dream tingle* deep inside of me! While being a closer’s assistant was not my ultimate goal- I knew I was finally on the right path! During my time at Land Title, I bought my first home on Green Mountain. After my home closing, I knew that I wanted to be a real estate agent!
I enrolled myself in real estate school and bought a fresh notebook. The school came and went, and I got licensed! I interviewed with my incredible brokerage, West + Main and knew instantly that I wanted to become part of the team. Becoming a real estate agent is the best decision I have ever made for myself. I have found a career that I get to exercise my creativity, be social, and drop gifts off at people’s front doorsteps! 🙂 I am truly grateful for every step along my journey. I wouldn’t change a day of it. To help people achieve their dreams is the most incredible feeling- and I don’t think I will ever get over it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Only the best of rides are taken on winding roads, though, right? Like the majority of young folks, I struggled to find a career that also gives me a sense of purpose. A job that actually “filled my cup up”… ya know? The millennial perspective really challenges the previously known ideologies about the relationship between finding meaningfulness and work. Many young people are not interested in the 9-5 grind when the grind is on behalf of someone else’s dream. I spent many days in a cube, scheming my graceful exit. There have been speed bumps and speed traps, but I just pumped the breaks when necessary, switched gears and kept accelerating.
We’d love to hear more about the business.
I am convinced that I hang my license at the BEST brokerage in all of Colorado. I am reasonably biased- but anyone who knows anything about West + Main knows exactly why! Not only is W+M locally owned, its female-owned! #whoruntheworld – am I right? Our marketing and creative teams are just unbelievable, and they are constantly making me look far cooler than I really am. Beyond aesthetic- we are a team of humans who truly care. We support one another through tough transactions. We share life stories on Slack, and we hold one another accountable- something that often goes by the wayside in real estate. I am beyond grateful to work for a brokerage that has guided me to become a trustworthy, hard-working and genuine real estate agent.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood has to be playing in my backyard. 🙂 I loved everything from worm and ladybug hunting, to building igloos, to Easter egg hunts. I learned the seasons in my childhood backyard, healed my first heartbreak, and mourned my mothers death in that yard. I guess you could say my favorite childhood memory is a place.
