Meet Alyce Blum

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyce Blum.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alyce. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a little girl I loved talking, connecting and learning about others. When I was four years old I would go up to complete strangers who were holding hands and ask them completely inappropriate, personal questions, such as, “Are you in love?” or “Are you boyfriend and girlfriend?” I hated small talk back then and it’s still something I despise now.

All these years later, I truly believe that we’re all looking for deeper, more meaningful connections. We’re all told that in order to be successful we have to network and yet none of us were taught how to network, build relationships or feel confident while doing so.

When I realized that most people feel self-conscious, nervous or even hate the idea of networking I knew that I could help people communicate, connect and build lasting professional relationships that yield higher levels of confidence and ultimately leave people feeling good about themselves.

Today, I believe that introverts are actually better networkers than extroverts and much of my work is focused on helping those that identify as introverts maximize their natural strengths when it comes to networking and business development goals.

I’ve turned my passion for people, connection and business development into a thriving networking coaching and consulting practice.

I coach CEOs and executives and facilitate interactive and fun networking sessions at conferences, association meetings and company retreats.

I absolutely love what I do!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my business five years ago was one of the hardest and most challenging things I’ve ever done. For the first year of business, I cried almost every day but would remind myself that I had nothing to lose (except all of my savings and my mental well-being) so I should keep going even if I had no idea what direction I needed to go.

Persistence and focus paid off and after six months of feeling completely lost and overwhelmed I decided to niche my business and become specialized as a networking coach and consultant. A lot of people pushed back on this idea and told me that it would never materialize but others were supportive and I knew that if I continued to work hard and offer more in value than what I took in payment I would succeed.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I believe that when people know how to build strong connections they afford themselves more opportunities. And when people know what they want and need they ultimately feel more confident and can build the foundation for effective professional and personal networks.

The truth is most people have never been taught soft skills and haven’t had the opportunity to really think about the following question, “Why do you get out of bed in the morning and why should anyone care?” As a certified, professional networking coach and consultant, I merge traditional coaching methods with soft skills to help empower people so they can learn how to create strong connections, lead a meaningful career and live a purposeful life.

Trained under the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC) I actively listen to my client’s needs by asking the right questions, honor a confidential and non-judgmental space, which results in clients creating their own solutions. As a coach, I help clients create benchmarks while holding them accountable for their desired success. I am passionate and believe in the coaching practice because it directly enables clients to ask for what they want in their life and then come up with a deliberate plan to take action while their confidence and self-esteem dramatically increases.

Before pursuing a career in coaching I graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in International Relations. After graduating I worked as a legal recruiter with Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, DC and then facilitated international trade at the Canadian Consulate in Denver, CO. I thrive on connecting with like-minded individuals, exploring all types of restaurants and cuisines and enjoy all cultural experiences that broaden and challenge my way of thinking.

I would love to meet the business owner who recognizes that they need to be out meeting people to increase brand awareness or strong sphere of influence.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always been a ‘people person’ and someone who loved traveling for opportunities to meet locals and eat different types of food. When I was 16 years old I convinced my parents to let me study/live abroad for six months in Ecuador and this was by far the most influential experience of my life. At the time I didn’t speak Spanish and it was a very overwhelming experience, to say the least, but I came out of that experience with more confidence than I could have imagined and a greater understanding of the world we live in and the incredible fortune I had to grow up in America with so many luxuries.

My passion for people and travel continued as I spent a year living in Spain where I perfected my Spanish language skills and was able to travel to numerous countries including Morocco. I witnessed real poverty for the first time in my life. These experiences have shaped me as the woman, mom, wife, friend, daughter, coach and speaker that I am today and help me teach others the invaluable lesson of empathy when it comes to building meaningful and lasting connections.
