Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Koneman and Catherine Dean.
Andrew, Catherine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We arrived at the concept for our product after our own disappointing search for a serious pair of men’s intimate wear.
Catherine and I got married a few years back and she got several pairs of lingerie from her bachelorette party, bridal shower, etc. I, understandably, did not get any. Although my banana printed boxer shorts were pretty novel in college, I thought my wife probably deserved better from me especially considering the selection she now had. With this in mind, we both looked for some nice looking intimate wear for me.
What we found was either colorful novelties (see exhibit A with banana print) or, shall we say, unapproachable. This inspired us to create Viktorwear which is the first serious approach to men’s intimate wear. We picked the highest quality materials available and fashioned masculine designs that tastefully highlight a man’s best features.
As I’m sure most small businesses discover, bringing our idea to fruition took much longer than we expected. One part of the process that was surprisingly convenient was organizing our production. We wanted to look for a manufacturer in the US for a variety of reasons and we ended up finding one right here in Colorado! Having all our inventory produced locally is a big point of pride for us.
Since we’ve been up and running our biggest channel has been directly through our website. Our current focus is building relationships with local clothing retailers.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All things considered, our experience has actually been pretty smooth. While there were, and continue to be, challenges that we have to respond to, we were pleasantly surprised with how much support we got from friends and family from photos to content to capital investments and even just the occasional words of encouragement.
Alright – so let’s talk about business. Tell us about Viktor – what should we know?
Viktor is a serious approach to men’s intimate wear. Right now, the availability (and expectations) are far greater for women’s underwear. What we offer is not only garments that make men look and feel like a million bucks, but also a way for them to show their special someone how important they are. Our dedication to that feeling is what separates us from other underwear brands. Like a designer suit, everything about our underwear’s design is made for impressing important people on important days.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination may be a cliche answer to this question, but it’s cliche for a reason. Difficulties are unavoidable; keeping the long-term vision at the horizon and short term goals right in front of you can certainly help, but at the end of the day you have to keep telling yourself that your idea is worth selling.
