Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Wells.
Angela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2013 I became an essential oil consultant for dōTERRA® and through reading I self-taught myself how essential oils can replace pharmaceutical drugs and cure common ailments. I also opted for locs (aka dreadlocks) during that time to return natural. Because my hair was severely damaged from back to back weaves, perms and constant pressing, combined with the stress of a high pressure job in a new city away from my family, my hair started thinning and falling out in 2014. Since I was having success with essential oils in many aspects of my life, I knew there had to be something to regrow my hair. I combined carrier oils, essential oils, and butters together, applying daily to my scalp and hair. By the end of 2015, it was the healthiest it had ever been in my life. My hair was thicker than ever and my dry, flaky, itchy scalp was gone! It was then that I knew I had to share it with the world. I launched Hair Gold in January of 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia and it was a huge hit. I started doing hair shows and pops up where customers would also express their needs for additional products like shampoo, body butter for skin ailments like eczema, and facial care. I joined forces with my sister and cousins, incorporating Serein Naturals as a collection of hair, face and body care products for women, men and children. I then moved to Denver where I recently cut my locs for a fresh start and continued to put myself out there online and at local events. I joined forces with Makisha Boothe, customer and owner of Sistahpreneurs, who helped me automate my business, perfect my brand and prepare to scale. Serein Naturals is now a five-figure business, working on six, and excited for what the future holds.
Has it been a smooth road?
Growth and success has come with many challenges. Serein Naturals almost died early in its incorporation going from a four women owned business to just myself as we became separated by three states and busy in our personal lives. It was now being solely funded by myself and I took loses the first two years in business. I then expanded my product collection too fast having close to 30 different products and quickly learned just because I can make something that doesn’t mean I should. Providing excellent customer service is one of my pillars and I had never used the United States Postal Service on a large scale before and that was its own learning experience. One of the most financial and timing consuming challenges was selecting and paying for pop up events with low turnout or just wasn’t the right fit for my business.

Serein Naturals specializea in products that nourish, hydrate and moisturize your hair, face, and body. We’re most known for our Hair Gold hair and scalp treatment, rose water, and customized face oil. I’m most proud of satisfying so many customers. When I get calls, emails, reviews and texts saying a Serein Naturals’ product made a difference in their life, well, that’s what I live for. The Serein Naturals difference is my products have more of the good stuff, but at affordable prices. So many hair and skincare products advertise the natural ingredient(s), but they will be at the bottom of the label, proceeded by chemicals and fillers. Serein Naturals has copious amounts of highly sought after pure essential oils, high-grade butter and other expensive oils, we don’t cut corners.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Serein Naturals launched in Atlanta, Georgia and was the perfect city for hair shows and popups for my target demographic. Six months after launching, my husband’s work brought us out to Denver, Colorado and I struggled to connect to the community here for a while. With the help of prominent community members, like Jeff Fard, Makisha Boothe, Manushkka Sainvil, Yazz Atmore, Phaedra High, and many others, I was able to plug in and expand my reach. Denver also offers many distinctive festivals that I’ve truly enjoyed being a part of. As a small business just starting out, I liked that the Colorado market wasn’t as saturated as Atlanta and I was able to better connect to my customers. They helped me perfect my formulas and product offerings, always provide great feedback, and best of all they are loyal – something I will never take for granted.
