Meet Angie Wright of Prodigees Project

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Wright.

Angie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up I always had a passion and love for art. Even at a young age, you would catch me dancing to nothing playing at all but the tunes in my head. Then once my parents had my younger sister it was like a prodigy was born. We both found a common love for performing arts, especially dance. Once I started high school we discovered dance battles (Like what you see in the movies) but in real life. Our first battle we entered was a 2 verses 2 freestyle at a local dance studio called School of Breaking, from there we entered every battle Denver had to offer! Aside from being a dancer, I’m also a poet, a DJ, and a producer.

In high school, I had the opportunity to advance my skills in each area that I had an interest in. I’ve DJ many school dances to rappers in the mile-high to artist like Rachel Bailey who has the #1 requested song on the radio to djing cornhole tournaments and local dance battles. I’ve been a finalist for Denver’s Youth poets laureate all before the age 21. But back in high school once my junior year hit, I came up with the idea of what I wanted to do when I grow up and what I wanted to go to school for. Then came into existence, Prodigees Project. Which at the moment is a multimedia platform but once I get my degree in business I want it to become a multimedia artist studio. A place where visual and performing artists can network, expand, teach, learn, all of the above in one building.

For the past two years, I’ve been inspired to host my own events that consist of dance battles, performances from local artists, visual artists vending their art, merchandiser vending their merchandise and more! I want something artistic and creative built for the community. But I’ve also discovered that there isn’t a lot of unity in Denvers artist community. Which is another reason why I feel that a place like Prodigees project needs to exist. I believe that to inspire youth of the next generation, educators and influencers today, need to teach them the ropes. With a place like Prodigees project, we would be able to do that and much more, As our slogan says, “We Aint Done Nothin Yet.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There’s a saying that if you do what is easy your life would be hard, but if you do what is hard your life would be easy. I have yet to meet anyone that believes their journey has been a smooth road. I’ve had a plethora of miles stones in my success story but I learned that the main product, then what’s after the finish line isn’t as big as the process it took to get there. For me well as much as high school was a fun experience it was also a lot of big lessons learned. If it wasn’t for a specific poetry teacher coming to my high school I never would have found the deep love I have for the creative arts. But if it wasn’t for the poetry teacher coming to my school I’ve could have been spared a lot of trauma and drama.

Unfortunately for me, my teacher took advantage of that love I had for the creative industry and turned it into hate. For three years he engaged in an illegal relationship with me while being in a relationship with another person who was also involved in the performing arts heavily. Once she discovered that things in all of our lives took a huge turn for the worst. Since I was underage at the time I was placed in the foster care system and had to deal with learning the system especially the court system. While I was suffering my creative dreams had to be put on hold while my alleged abuser was free for a year and a half.

Once he was finally charged his girlfriend at the time took the hurt she had from him and turned it into hate for me, which was confusing since they were both the adults and I was the child but that’s a question I will never have an answer too. since she had such a big influence on the Denver hip hop dance community that made it almost difficult to enjoy dance battles as much as I did. To this day thanks to actions that were performed from all parties my journey on this success story has been anything but smooth. As much as I don’t like it, its part of my story and what has made me who I am today. I learned that mistakes don’t become permanent unless you refuse to correct them and learn from it. But I know that I’m braver than my past and stronger than my struggles. I’m not gonna allow anyone to prevent me from the blessings I was destined to receive. “We Aint Done Nothin Yet.”

We’d love to hear more about your work
I have a deep passion for art and spreading creativity all around. Prodigees Project- A multimedia Artist studio. Where everyone is recognized as an artist no matter what form, from poetry to photography to dancing to drawing.

Prodigees Projects’ mission is to provide an open space and artistic faculty for artists of all ages, no matter the level of knowledge or experience one may have for the art they’re interested in, to have access to. My goal for this studio is to become a multimedia studio with multiple artistic opportunities and access as well as expanding creativity to the community and the world. Prodigees Project is a space for artists to grow, learn, and experience multiple mediums. The world needs more creativity and with creativity bring positivity.

I believe that art changes the world and our world needs more art in and all around it. I know my studio will be a big step in promoting this change. As an artist myself it takes more luck than talent to pursue a full-on artist career, but with Prodgees project not only will my art not die nor fade but will give other artist the resources they need to succeed and this is important to me, mainly because everyone is an artist at heart, they just need that nudge and a consistent place that has all the resources they need in one place and I want to provide that space. I need that space myself.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Aside from getting a degree in International Business – BS I’m excited to do more events and to spread more creativity to the community, My main goal is to travel and spread awareness of what it is I’m trying to do and grow the audience and supporters for Prodigees project.

It’s a new decade which means time and room for a big change. #WeAintDoneNothinYet
