Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Beyerle.
Anna, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Anchored Creative Studio in 2016 on the precipice of a big life change. I was moving cities and had just handed in my notice as a marketing manager. I’d worked in nonprofits my entire adult career, and had sensed a disconnect in the marketing work of these passionate, often bootstrapped organizations. These organizations did incredible work but were often so inundated with the day to day work that they lost sight of promoting that invaluable difference they were making. I was feeling a pull to make a difference through providing marketing and graphic design services to better promote these organizations and decided to opt-out of pursuing a full-time job in my new city, instead offering freelance and contract services instead.
We’ve gone through iterations of services and offerings over the years, but we’ve hit a sweet spot – working with social impact organizations to further their reach through creative, brand-driven work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is any road smooth for an entrepreneur? There have absolutely been some struggles along the way, but I’ve learned so much more about myself and my business in a condensed amount of time than I ever could have in a traditional job setting.
Many of my own struggles have come from comparison. It’s easy to feel like you’re doing a great job, only to look at similar organizations and business owners you admire and feel suddenly defeated or like not enough. But everyone has their struggles, whether they’re outwardly open about them or not. Stay in your own lane, put your energy into your own work, and you’ll do just fine.
Please tell us about Anchored Creative Studio. What should we know?
Anchored Creative Studio is a branding studio for social impact organizations. Our work falls into two main specialties: 1) establishing branding for a shifting organization (this can include logos and other design work, as well as defining an organization’s mission, values, and overall messaging, and guidance where to focus marketing efforts); and 2) ongoing creative work, in the form of creative direction and ongoing design and marketing implementation.
To harken back to my nonprofit roots, I’ve continually felt to the pull to work with organizations working to make an impact. I feel the most fulfilled and excited about my work when partnering with an equally ambitious organization. Our clients include traditional nonprofits, schools, membership organizations for nonprofit leaders, and for-profit organizations with a social impact focus.
I feel most proud of Anchored when we create work for any organization that truly speaks to what they are. Our visuals pull in the audience your organization wants to impact, and our marketing choice drives the message home. It gives me such great joy to make work that’s making a difference.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
For me, luck has presented itself in the form of opportunity. The opportunity of great connections and potential clients has jump-started my business in times I didn’t necessarily expect it to. I’ve worked with amazing individuals (both as clients and in other partnerships) who have referred me to some of my longest-running clients, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
I’ve learned just as much from what some might consider “bad luck,” which I’ve seen as just another type of opportunity – rough client experiences, navigating the nuance of client communications, and unexpected hurdles to jump over. There’s a lot of learning when it comes to being a business owner, and these opportunities have accelerated my growing process, and are something I’ve learned a lot from.
