Meet Annalise Hoerter of A List Pics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annalise Hoerter.

Annalise, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am dyslexic. Dyslexia is a learning disability that impacts an individual’s ability to read and write, and the severity differs from person to person. When I am reading, it looks like the letters are dancing; they flip and trade spots with each other from the top and bottom rows. I am a good student, but it is extremely difficult to apply concepts while focusing on just getting through the next sentence.

When I decided to get serious about photography, is when my life began to balance out. Figuratively, literature and I do not make a great team. However, light and I are the winning teams. In college, I learned how to control light and create the dazzling show I mentally visualized from a pitch-black room. This is where my love for commercial photography spiked! Products, portraits, fashion, food, and events are what I love photographing the most, especially when I can incorporate my Photoshop skills like compositing and retouching images.

Last year was a completely different story for my photography career. I was starting from the ground up when my school shockingly closed three months before my graduation date. Transferring added another year and a half, but I am ecstatic to graduate in May 2020. I am always willing to learn, but I do not view myself as a student. Over the past four years, I have gained experience through internships and assisting that have helped me succeed in A List Pics LLC currently. I am confident and proud of the product, lifestyle, and food images for local and U.S. based companies that I have been doing as a freelance commercial photographer as well as recent event photography that has allowed me to travel. My versatile skill set grants me the flexibility to work in the studio or out on location to create photographs an audience has a positive connection to.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Freelancing is not a smooth road. When the emails, phone calls, personal messages, etc. go silent, that is when the panic and the waterfall of questions roars in. I am put up against my wall of worst fears. My “wall” is being back in the jobs I had in the past where I felt lonely, misjudged, unappreciated, and betrayed.

Learning through experience is the best way to fully understand something. I have learned that time stops for no one, and deadlines are deadlines. When I am feeling the stresses of being a freelancer, I change my mindset. It is about getting out there to be the best photographer I can be so my business can grow.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
A List Pics LLC provides a-list photographs. As a freelance commercial photographer, I specialize in products, portraits, fashion, food/beverage, and events. It does not matter how great your subject is if the lighting is unflattering. I pride myself on being able to find or artificially create beautiful light. I believe that my historic and technological skills of photography help guide my/client’s story and make the two-dimensional surface appear three dimensional. This allows me to relieve stress from of my clients because I can work in the studio or out on location. As a company, I am proud of my soft skills. I have professional relationships with my clients, respond to messages in a timely matter, and help people of all ages feel comfortable in front of my lens.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am proud of my problem-solving skills, especially under pressure. This has brought my career to new heights. One example was when my client wanted an image that could not have possibly been done in one photoshoot. With time and budget as our limiting factors and things on set not going as planned, I composited the image for my client. They were joyous with the final photograph as well as my professional skills. I am grateful for their positive feedback.
