Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Joon.
Ashley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being an artist was something I dreamt about for as long as I could remember. It became my identity at a very young age. I lost that identity as I got older and gave into family expectations and society’s norms. I went to school for business, landed a corporate job right away and was left feeling accomplished but unfulfilled. A childhood friend passed away and I was struck with a sense of not wasting my life to please everyone else. I was lucky enough to have a boss that encouraged me to paint again, so I did. I painted her son as a parting gift and I left my job to pursue my passion. From there it took seven years exploring with paint, working odd jobs and eventually becoming an art teacher before I truly found my creative voice. I left my job as a teacher with a sense of urgency to fulfill my dream. I’m now celebrating my fifth year as a professional artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not even close to a smooth road. It’s more like hiking an unfamiliar trail. I know the destination will be worth it but I don’t know what it will take to get there. I’m figuring it out one step at a time.
Pushing myself creatively and overcoming self-doubt is a continuous practice. For example, I was extremely nervous agreeing to do my first mural. Once I started painting all the nerves went away. Now murals have become a big part of my business and I’m honored to be a part of CRUSH this year.
Living a life as an artist can be a bit unpredictable. All I can do is apply to as many opportunities as I can, even if they scare me and see which ones come to fruition. The more I expose myself the better my chances are to sustain this dream.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I create expressive florals and abstract paintings using acrylic paint. There’s a looseness to my work that I attribute to the music I listen to while I create. Standing on my feet, moving my body to the beat, channeling certain emotions all contribute to my style. I strive for my work to carry positive energy that will influence their surroundings.
I’ve created murals in public spaces and private homes. I sell original work on canvas, prints, and am available for commissions. I’m also known for painting wedding bouquets.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I definitely think Denver is a great place for an artist. There are so many local businesses that showcase Denver artists by either hanging artwork or commissioning murals. With Denver growing the way it is, the opportunities are fruitful.
