Meet Becky Migas of B.Green Events in Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Migas.

Becky, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my entrepreneurial journey long before starting B.Green Events. Ten years ago, I was actively living a sustainable lifestyle by recycling and making smart purchasing decisions. I knew that individuals’ actions added up to make a big difference in the health of the planet. One day, while working on my MBA, I was having lunch with my professor and mentor, talking about what I wanted to do after graduating from Missouri State. I mentioned that I had a passion for sustainability, and he replied, “Well, that’s what you should be doing with your life!” After graduation, I moved to Des Moines, IA for a few years to begin making connections and blogging about sustainable events while working a full time job at a 1,250 seat historic theater. Among my accomplishments during my time in Des Moines, I successfully brought a recycling program to Hoyt Sherman Place through a local grant.

After a few years of working in Des Moines and engaging in sustainability programs on the side, I accepted a job with a concert promoter in Denver. My new job was extremely demanding, and I didn’t have the time to continue working on environmental endeavors. At the same time, my exposure to the events industry opened my eyes to the incredible amount of waste that goes into almost every event. Beyond a simple lack of recycling on the consumers’ end, I recognized a huge amount of waste on the operational side of these events as well.

I decided that my experience in the events industry combined with my deep passion for sustainability perfectly prepared me to start my own business. In April 2018, I left my full-time job to start B.Green Events, working with all different industries that produce events to help them rethink their operations from the very beginning. From sustainable operations and decor to diverting waste, B.Green Events “rethinks events with an environmental twist.”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is starting a business a smooth road for any entrepreneur? If so, I’d love to meet them! Of course, I hit my challenges. The sustainability world on its own is a challenge. There is so much we still have to learn and so much that has to be changed, yet there are a lot of barriers. We also live in a world where convenience is key and sustainability is just not there yet. We know that individuals, companies and events WANT to be sustainable, but what does that mean and how do they get there without losing money? It’s a question many events have and I’m working hard to help resolve those issues whether it comes to energy, waste or any aspect that impacts our environment. We must provide education to not only those producing events but to those that attend events as well. It’s a daily struggle, but excited to be a part of the change for the good!

Tell us more about your business.
B. Green Events is an event planning, management and consultation company, that works with events in all industries to design and manage events with environmental sustainability in mind from beginning to end. By re-thinking the event planning process, we can create events with a clean environment for patrons, clients, employees, volunteers, sponsors, and of course, Mother Earth.

I bring over ten years of event planning and management experience to my passion for environmental sustainability. I look at all aspects of the event from production, operations, vendors, sponsorships, front of the house and more to produce fun and exciting environmental events by RE-thinking and implementing the 5 RE’s—Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle (&Compost) creatively and cost-effectively. I work with clients to meet them where they are and to work with them to incorporate initiatives that work for them. Sometimes we go big and sometimes we start small with the plan to build our “green” plan as the event grows year to year. It’s about making changes in a way that works for the client and the attendees.

I have had the opportunity over the past year to work with amazing companies and non-profits to help them reduce their waste and divert any waste at the end of the event. I have diverted over 3,000 lbs. of waste from events, such as East High School After Prom, Youth on Record Block Party and Cannabis Sustainability Symposium, this past year and excited to do so much more.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I always dreamed of running my own business and now realize that it really does take a village. First and foremost, the credit goes to my significant other of 10 years, Chris DeRosier. I was in a place that I needed to leave before starting my business and he never once doubted me nor worried about the financial aspect. He gave the support and encouragement I need when I decided it was time to move on from my job. Still to this day, Chris is my biggest sounding board and supporter for me when it comes to B.Green Events. He even goes out and helps me sling some trash when needed!

My family also deserves a lot of credit. I’m fortunate to come from a family of three other siblings and parents who encouraged my overall happiness. My family is there when I’m feeling down to lift me and provide positive words of encouragement to keep moving forward.

Finally, I have also had the opportunity to connect with amazing women while working in the world of sustainability. I have found that I rely on these women to help educate, empower and excite me when it comes to sustainability. With that, I created a Women in Sustainability (Denver) group that brings us together to build community, network and empower each other. I am looking forward to bringing more sustainability education to the group next year.
