Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Nicol.
Brad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began photography shortly after high school. Enrolled at a local community college, I found my way into a black and white film photography course. The next year I took a photography trip with the instructor and members of the class to Italy and France. We spent our time there working on our craft. Upon my return, I was accepted to Brooks Institute of Photography in California. At that point, it was clear that photography was the direction I was going and it took the next couple of years to figure out that architectural photography was my main passion. After graduating in 2008 with a BA in Commercial Photography I began my business.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, there have been too many struggles to count. Everyone will go through things in business and in life that push them to the brink and will make them want to quit. I have been extremely fortunate that my family, friends, and especially my wife, have encouraged me through my whole career. I think that most artists have fears that they are not good enough and that people may not like their work. Being able to overcome those fears will help you tremendously. Henry Ford once said, “One of the greatest discoveries a man makes is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn’t do.”
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I specialize in architectural photography. Design has always been a passion for me and whether it is interiors or exteriors, I really enjoy figuring out how best to light and compose an image to show off the design and intent of the client. Everything I do is a collaboration between the client and myself. We work hard to achieve the images they want and make the process fun and enjoyable.
One aspect that sets me apart from many other photographers is my photography education from Brooks. I was fortunate enough to spend the entire first year of school focusing on film, which really pushed me as a photographer. From developing and printing film to studying the great photographers before us, I am so thankful that I got the photography education that I did.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment has been when my business generated not only money but also time. I reached a point where I was able to do the things I love while my business running itself to a degree.
