Meet Brady Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brady Stewart.

Brady, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
J. Brady’s seasonings offers proprietary seasoning blends that draw from traditional American and international flavors and puts a personal, craft spin into each signature seasoning blend to give a unique and delicious experience every time. I began J. Brady’s in February 2017. I had been wanting to start a business of my own and knew I wanted it to be food-related. My wife noticed I was always blending seasonings and herbs in my own kitchen due to not being able to find what I wanted at the store. On her recommendation, I started my own seasonings business.

The owner, Brady Stewart, originally hails from Wichita Falls, Texas. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biosystems Engineering (Food Engineering) from Oklahoma State University and works as an engineer for a large cheese manufacturer when he’s not working on J. Brady’s. He has held almost every job in the food industry and is an avid home cook and food and beverage enthusiast. He is also a food and beverage contributor for NOCO Magazine and Loveland and South Lifestyle Magazine, local Colorado publications.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but a fun and rewarding one. One of the biggest hurdles was where to start. Researching, gaining know-how, and just getting your business up and running was definitely a challenge. Making the leap from making something in your home to a commercially made product that can sell in retailers was another. The biggest “leap” so far has been getting my products in with a distributor and having them sell in a large grocer chain (Safeway). All that being said, the equation is probably 90% hard work and 10% luck.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J. Brady Seasonings story. Tell us more about the business.
We make proprietary seasoning blends meant to be used from the kitchen to grill with distinct, but accessible flavors. All flavors have been developed and perfected in Brady’s own kitchen and has the perfect balance of flavors. Each offering is based off a cuisine style or cuisine “genre” that allows the home cook or chef to include the traditional flavors indicative to each cuisine without the hassle (or cost) of purchasing an array of spice ingredients. These products are intended for use on a multitude of dishes within each of these cuisine styles.

Based out of Fort Collins, Colorado, we have been in business since February 2017. We are currently in 130 retailers throughout Colorado (including independent Lucky’s and Safeway Grocers) and ~25 independent retailers in other states. Additionally, we currently have three separate restaurants we sell bulk seasonings to for food service. We are proud that we are a local owned business that we have built our company through local vendors, makers, and people who love food here in Colorado.

What sets us apart is passion. We love food and beverage. We love knowing about it-culturally, scientifically, nutritionally. We love the food culture in Colorado, where people know what’s good and are willing to go out and seek it. We truly started out of our kitchen and know we are in chain grocers. To me, that speaks to not only our passion for our products but also the people of Colorado willing to choose and support local products. At the end of the day, that feels good.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think variety in cuisines as well as a conscientious and informed consumers will expand the category opening the doors for more makers and variety in products. Additionally, the trend of people wanting to support local businesses and eat locally will continue. We see both of these as good things as it means more consumers will be willing to enjoy our products.
