Today we’d like to introduce you to Brannon Peterkin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brannon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started on the road of technology back in middle school. I loved playing video games as a kid. I wanted to eventually learn how to make my own video games. In middle school, you receive the Scholastic Book Fair flyers every few months. In one of the flyers, I saw they offered a computer program called ‘Learn To Program BASIC’.
I remember they advertised the book as a program where you learn basic programming and can make a game from there. I was excited. I ordered the book and went through the courses and exercises in the book several times over. As I continued through the rest of middle school and high school, I continued to practice the BASIC programming language, and then tested out several other programs (GameMaker Studio comes to the forefront of my mind).
When I got to college, I landed on computer science as a major. I knew that I would be able to learn programming and could use that knowledge to make video games. After I took my first computer science course and recitation lab, my eyes were truly opened. At that point, I realized that while video games were cool, you could do so much more with programming and development. After my first year, my technology shift focused away from video games. The idea that you could create something from nothing intrigued me much more than video games. I decided to minor in business administration because I knew at some point that I wanted to start a business.
At the time, I didn’t know what the business would be. I knew that at a minimum, I would at least need to have the background knowledge so that I could hit the ground running when the time was right. Now throughout this time period, people would come to me with technology-based questions. I would help people with everything ranging from basic software installation issues to more hardware-based problems. Several people asked for help with developing websites and eventually, I started working on my first program (Professional Office Assistant). I didn’t know it at the time, but each one of these elements would play a role into the creation and development of Think In Boxes, LLC and the services we offer.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would be lying if I said it has been a smooth road. I would also be lying if I said I would have wanted otherwise because each obstacle we’ve encountered has resulted in a better end result for each of our clients. As a startup, there is a ton of work that goes into running the day to day of the business. On top of that, we strive to ensure our clients achieve the best end result. People have said it in the past and once you start a business, you realize the true meaning of wishing there was more time in the day. Technology is an ever-changing field. It is also a crowded space so it not only requires innovation at all times, but it also requires constantly learning. In the beginning, it was a struggle determining which services we wanted to offer, who our target audience was, and what we wanted to do to differentiate ourselves from others. This required revisiting the drawing board several times and making constant adjustments to our business plan.
One day, I sat down and was reviewing the mission I have when it comes to technology. I believe it should be affordable and accessible to everyone. Whether you are an individual, a small business owner, or a Fortune 500 company, you should have the same access to the quality of service you would get as a fortune 500 company. I use technology daily and see how much of a benefit myself and others get when it’s properly implemented and want everyone to experience the same benefits which means ensuring it is affordable to absolutely everyone. Once we went through each of the services offered and made sure it absolutely fell in line with this principle, that’s when we felt like we hit the ball out of the park. We will always run into a struggle or issue but as long as we keep the customer’s best interest in mind with everything, we know that we will always overcome.
Please tell us about Think In Boxes. What should we know?
Think In Boxes is an IT consulting firm. We provide website design and management, business intelligence, graphic design, cloud migration, 24/7 IT support, digital marketing, and custom application development services to individuals and businesses of all sizes. Our company is founded on the belief that technology can be complicated at times. It is our absolute duty to not only make it simple so that everyone can take advantage of all of the benefits, but to make it affordable and accessible to everyone.
If you are a startup or small business, you should have access to the same benefits that allow large scale corporations to run at an automated and seamless pace. If you are a large scale business, you should be able to experience your day to day operations with the confidence that your IT systems won’t fail you at a critical time of need. If you’re what you would consider the average computer user, your devices should work as well as the day you bought them (even if the device was purchased several years ago).
We are known for providing IT services that a large number of individuals and businesses would not normally have access to due to budget restrictions. I am incredibly proud of the impact Think In Boxes has had on our clients to date. Whether we look at digital marketing, website design, custom apps, or IT support, it is just the best feeling in the world to see how businesses that were hesitant on using tech in each aspect of their business take advantage of it in such a natural way. Our 24/7 IT support customers are always surprised when they reach out at 11:00 pm and past midnight and get an instant response and we start working on their issue (personally, those are my favorite moments).
It’s providing services and responses to the larger scale audience that are outside of the large corporations and seeing individuals and businesses thrive as a result that lets us know we are doing our job right. Most IT companies charge a ton of money. There are countless times where we have talked to individuals and business owners and their response was, “we wanted to do this, but it’s just too much for us cost-wise.” We are here to eliminate that case. We accomplish this while making sure you feel like you have an in-house IT department at your disposal.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was goofy hahaha. In my mind, I had to have thought I was the coolest kid ever but in reality, I was a goof. There were times I was boisterous and loud, and other times when I was quiet. I tell people that naturally, I’m an extroverted introvert. I always had a creative streak. I used to draw and build legos. Eventually, I learned several instruments starting with alto saxophone (played for almost 19 years now) and branching off into piano, acoustic/electric guitar, harmonica, and bass.
