Meet Brett Lysiak of Pin.Pusher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Lysiak.

Brett, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in South Florida, Brett found his love for cartoons and drawing them at a very young age. He was constantly getting in trouble in school for doodling instead of paying attention. After moving to Denver, Colorado in 2015, he was quickly given the opportunity to try his hand at murals and immediately fell in love with painting at a larger scale. Soon after, he began developing a variety of characters to paint and once he hit the voodoo doll, it stuck. He loved the idea of repetition and started to use the voodoo doll as his main subject for his artwork in various mediums ranging from spray paint on walls, canvas paintings, digital illustrations, wood cut-outs, shirts, and stickers. Now he’s very active in the street art and graffiti scene in Denver, painting murals, characters, letters and popping up in art shows all over the city. In the future he’s planning on working on 3D sculptures, more clothing, comic books, animations, and any other ideas that come to mind. Check out his art on Instagram @pin.pusher.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been smooth for the most part. I’ve met a lot a really cool artists who have been more than helpful to share their knowledge to help me progress. Only struggles I can think of is that there’s not enough spots to paint haha.

Please tell us about your art.
I am an artist under the name Pin.Pusher. My work it mostly based around my voodoo doll character I have been working on the last few years. The medium I prefer is spray paint but I do just about anything I can’t think of. Plenty of canvas and digital pieces, t-shirts, stickers, and I’ve been working on perfecting a 3D figure. I believe that the repition of my character in a variety of styles helps people remember that little blue guy looking back at them and makes them smile.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I’ve always had a love for cartoons. It’s not really one experience but growing up in the late 90s-early 2000s, my brother and I watched tons of Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Hanna-Barbara, and other various shows and movies. I remember trying to mimic some of those characters, sometimes tracing them from books or magazine pages. I would relentlessly erase my lines and start again to make it as perfect as possible. Then having to search for the perfect matching colored pencils or crayons to bring it to life. I had a lot of fun doing that until one day I guess I just stopped. It took at least 10-15 years for me to start drawing characters again but as soon as I did, I was hooked.
