Meet Brice Erichsen of Código 1530 Tequila

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brice Erichsen.

Brice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Like many of us, my academic career didn’t exactly translate into my eventual ‘real’ career. Spending endless hours in biochemistry labs taught me to focus and persistence, but social interaction wasn’t exactly a perk of the profession. Shortly after moving to Colorado, a ski trip in the backcountry and an unlikely meeting motivated a hard left turn to a young company called ‘Red Bull.’

Start as a dishwasher? How about start by driving a Mini Cooper. After 12+ years of X-Games, F1 Racing, soapbox derbies, record labels and grassroots events – the innovative brand showed me that marketing a lifestyle is far more intuitive than marketing a product. Especially considering the inconvenience of a (debatably) ‘non-essential’ product.

Eventually, both curiosity and opportunity knocked on the same door as I began working with several young and start-up brands until eventually going ‘all-in’ with a humble craft tequila project. The trip to Jalisco, MX completely changed my outlook on both Mexico and the tequila industry. Walking the fields, meeting the families, and learning about the age-old codes & customs of the region provided the inspiration for what would be the next venture, working with Código.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every business or company experiences lifecycles, awkward start-ups, exciting growth, setbacks, changes in market or trend, stagnating or gradual decline. Understanding this inevitability, it often comes down to making the most of a bad situation, laughing it off, and then getting back to work.

Please tell us about Código 1530 Tequila.
As a formerly private and unnamed tequila, Código 1530 is still made using the same family distilling methods perfected over five generations. We use only the first press of the agave plant to extract the light, sweet flavors found naturally in the region. Once distilled, the Blanco tequila is aged exclusively in Napa Valley Cabernet barrels, imparting a soft and uniquely smooth flavor and finish. If you’re new to tequila, try sipping on our Rosa Tequila – a light pink tequila from the Cabernet still staining the inside of the barrels.

As a watch out – unfortunately, as the tequila industry continues to gain popularity, the agave plant shortage and prices are causing many other companies, even mainstream brands, to take cost-saving shortcuts, including the addition of artificial sweeteners and vanilla flavoring.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Success is entirely a result of the people I surround myself with. Family, close friends, mentors and colleagues – the greatest success comes when it’s hard to distinguish between them.
