Meet Bridget Dorr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridget Dorr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Bridget. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started studying ceramics and photography in college. I fell in love with ceramics and throwing on the wheel. After college, I kept up with both but felt very disconnected from these communities after graduating. After some time not being involved in my favorite art forms, I decided to buy a bag of clay and make hand-built wares on my kitchen table. I fired them at a local community art studio and took my own product shots. Here I am today. I make all my pottery from hand (I don’t use the wheel). And I take all my product and lifestyle photos. I am also a wedding and lifestyle photographer.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Graduating from college and leaving a state of the art studio space and an artistic community was hard. It took me three years to find a flow again and to start creating. I am constantly finding the balance between friend, family, work and creating. I’ve taken my craft full time in the past few years, but then have gone back to a full-time gig and doing art on the side. I’m finding putting a lot of pressure on making art can be really tough on me. I’m finding the right balance every day.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a photographer and a ceramic artist. I make hand-built ceramic wares, all functional. That means I use slabs of clay to built mugs, cups, etc. I don’t use a wheel to throw pottery. That means my work has a less symmetrical form and more of a unique shape each time I make a piece. I also love photography and have a business capturing images of products, people, and food professionally in and around the Boulder area. My studio is located in East Boulder.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Making ceramic pieces that help people slow down and appreciate the small moments. As a photographer, I feel so proud to be a photographer in the Boulder area, and being able to capture beautiful moments between people being their adventurous selves.
