Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Jane.
Britney, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Wow! Where do I even begin. I’m originally from Roanoke, Virginia – Star City, as we call it. I moved to Denver in 2014. My best friends moved out here first, and I basically followed not too longer after that. I felt like all my life, I always listened to what others thought I should be doing with my life. So when I packed my Jeep and my dog and decided to leave, I didn’t really mention it to anyone. I told myself that it was time for me to take that leap of faith. I had no job lined up, I crashed on the sofa at my best friend’s house, it was a lot in the beginning. I told myself though that moving and creating a change, I would focus on my music. Of course, several years would go by because I got a job and with that and life, I lost track of what has always been important to me- Singing. I have been singing since I was a child, whether for church or just singing on my karaoke machine for my dad or mom, I knew that singing was something special for me.
Fast-forwarding to the summer of 2017, I really started finding my independence and knew that it was my time to pursue music in some way. October of 2017, I joined forces with the talented Lee Clark Allen and started singing backup, which really started opening doors and creating the foundation for me as a singer. Whether it was performing at local venues, to adding vocals for other artists in the Denver area, booking my own gigs here and there around town, I started to realize more and more that this gift from God, should be shared.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! I’ve had band members quit on me, I’ve struggled with self-doubt, as well as trying to find balance with working a 9-5 and still have time to focus on music. Of course, with the band members quitting, you just have to keep moving, but the self-doubt really got me down. When I decided that I truly wanted to pursue music, I started finding myself dealing with a lot of anxiety. The comparisons came more and the questioning of if I was good enough caused a mental breakdown, along with the the stress of other life matters, I ended up having to seek therapy (no shame in my game) because I knew that this battle I was facing was only temporary, and I had to get my mind right. The biggest thought that really held me back was the fact that I didn’t want to be labeled as the “background singer” A thought that seems so basic had so much power over my mind. At that point, I had to take a break from performing and decided to really focus on getting my mind back in the right place. In the end it was important for me to realize that challenges are going to happen, but how you handle them and what you learn from them is what’s important. It’s all about building yourself up to be what you want to be.
Please tell us about what you do.
I’m known as an R&B/soul singer as well as the background vocalist for Kayla Marque – One of the most amazing singers I know!
I think the biggest thing that I’m proud of is that I love the singer that is in me. Maybe it has taken me longer than others to truly accept and love myself, but my sound is truly my sound. Whether I’m singing background vocals (which I absolutely love), or singing one of my songs, I am an artist. I am a singer, and like many of us I love music!!!#musicsavedmylife
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When my brother Al and I were kids, we would wait until my mom left for work and we would have a music concert. We would take my mom’s hairspray bottles and label them as awards like “best female singer”, “best male rapper”, etc. We would dance and just perform as if we were real music artist accepting awards for being such great musicians. We would turn the music up super loud and jam out as if we had a real audience. We were strange kids. Haha!
