Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryant Alcantara.
Bryant, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in Houston TX and I’m so grateful for every second of my stay there. Shy for most of my childhood, towards the end of high school, I became sociable. Graduating from the Art Institute of Houston with a digital film & video production degree. Then, I proceeded to work with production companies for several years to come.
In my mid twenties, I began exploring social media, with Instagram and Snapchat. I discovered the untapped potential of mobile devices and applied skills learned in school, to equipment that I already had. It showed me the vast potential that a single person can achieve with limited supplies, and a dedicated vision.
Now days, I reside in Westminster CO with my partner. Creating content on my mobile device to accomplish what I would on my desktop. I may be meticulous when creating my content but the effort is always worthwhile. Occasionally I get so absorbed into my work that I have to step back from social media to regain some clarity.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been an easy path. There were a few years in my mid twenties where I thought it was harmless to self deprecate. And it seemed normal, until I saw it being done by other people to themselves. It was horrific! When you self deprecate it gets instilled into you conscious patterns, suddenly that is your definition of yourself. It took continuous efforts of self acknowledgements and understanding patterned behaviors to forgive myself. There was an enormous weight off my shoulders, once I stopped beating myself up for not meeting others expectations and rejections. Some of that inner pain is a form of ancestral trauma that I am healing for my future, one day at a time.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Since the beginning of this lockdown, I got a job as a package handler to keep the bills at bay. I also love to be outdoors, read a book at a time, learn JavaScript and trade massages with my partner, we’re both massage therapists.
Though most of my creative work is done on my mobile device, where I edit content, do research and communicate. I have a desktop where complex projects are created relating to, motion graphics, extensive video productions or logos/illustrated designs. I show that our mobile devices are more than tiny computers, their also powerful machines.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have always had a wild imagination. Since a child, I’ve been able to see images and create scenarios out of mundane everyday things. I would use remote controls, water bottles, and pen caps to indicate spaceships moving through space. Arriving in the space station on the kitchen counter, next to the salt and pepper. I also would draw with my fingers, lines, street corners and buildings to indicate a bustling city on the living room carpet. Pushing my cars around trying to solve the best way to get around the traffic.
