Meet Kelsey Fagan of BWBacon Group in Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Fagan.

Kelsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Did anyone else graduate college and have no idea what in the world they were going to do? After a few year stint in real estate (sometimes finding what you don’t want to do is just as valuable as finding your dream job right out of the gate), I was looking for my next move. My sister called me one afternoon with an opportunity she knew about from a client looking for a temporary worker in an entry-level business operations capacity for four months at a technical staffing agency. Sure, why not! Those four months turned quickly into five years at BWBacon Group (BWB). Dave Bacon, BWB’s CEO, really took a chance on me. I started as an operations admin and have had the amazing opportunity to carve out my role, taking on more responsibility as I built my skillset. Now, I’m so proud to be a part of our leadership team, helping to catapult BWB and breaking barriers in the technical staffing space.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A smooth road does not make for an adventurous and impactful life! When I first started out, I was just thankful to have a job, but as I got more comfortable and started adding to my skillset, I really started to define for myself how I could have an impact in my company and for the larger community. One of the best parts of my job has been to help redefine the culture and structure of BWB with the goal of growth. A large part of a great culture is having the right people on the bus and as we have defined our culture, some attrition has happened. It’s never easy to have people you’ve been in the trenches with move on, but I’m a big believer that people should love their job. And if you don’t love your job at BWB, I want to support a person to find a place they do love, which ultimately makes room for the person that does align with our culture. The other big challenge in the technical staffing industry is competition. It’s been a rewarding challenge to differentiate ourselves in the industry and hone in on what value we can offer that no one else can. We’re in a people business and anytime people are involved, high emotions can be, too. I’m proud of the way our team navigates the often-stressful parts of staffing by keeping our wits about us and remembering that every role that needs to be filled is actually a human with their own set of desires.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
BWBacon Group is a technical staffing company. We play matchmaker with top-notch technical talent all throughout the country with extremely innovative and versatile companies in Colorado and several other states. To put it simply and as I stated before, we are in the business of helping people. We get to be a part of hundreds of people’s life-changing decisions. Finding a new job as a candidate or finding talent as a company is no easy task. We literally exist to carry that weight. While I personally am not a recruiter finding that talent, or in sales helping those companies, being in the operational side of this business allows me to be part of everything in a way. My job is to remove obstacles so that every piece of BWB runs smoothly and has what it needs to make things happen.

I am extremely proud to be a part of BWBacon Group because we really do pride ourselves on our values. We operate as a team with openness, enthusiasm, honesty, and authenticity in every single corner of what we do. Providing quality has always been more important to our CEO and the entire team than any metric that we aim to reach. I really appreciate being a part of a team that constantly wants to be better. BW stands for “better with,” and we are here to connect people and build better teams.

What were you like growing up?
I was a tomboy growing up and did every sport available. One of my favorite stories my parents still tell is when they walked into my room and found me perfecting my front flip from my desk to my bed at four years old. While I was shy around people, I had zero fear when it came to activities. That lent itself well to my first love, downhill ski racing. I spent years (all the way through college) traveling the world as an alpine ski racer to find the steepest hills and fastest mph’s on skis. Racing taught me absolute discipline and dedication, both things I draw on daily in my professional and personal life. Although I can still be shy with people today, I still am driven by the same sense of adventure and fun of the girl that figured out how to execute the perfect desk to bed front flip.
