Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlyn Schwarz.
Hi Caitlyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been working in retail for just over 13 years! In the beginning, I knew I wanted to pursue something in a creative field and working in a store gave me an outlet to express that creativity. I’ve always been passionate about sustainability but learning more about how ethical practices can foster growth and value in communities. I started to connect the dots. I began to make the switch about four years ago to only shopping small and with ethical brands when possible. That was the beginning of my love for supporting small makers and creating connections. I started working for small shops while also doing freelance photography for local makers. I have always dreamed of having a space of my own to gather talented people and share their work, but more importantly, to share their stories.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As I became more invested in helping others achieve their dreams, following my own dream took a back seat. I have wanted to open my own store for several years, but I didn’t know exactly how to get there. Floating through different jobs was frustrating at times but looking back, every single experience was for a reason and helped me gain the skills I needed to go out on my own. Over time I was able to learn what was important to me and where I wanted to go with my vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Conifer?
Conifer is a shop dedicated to supporting small makers and helping them grow. Everything we carry is slowly crafted; however, it’s more than beautifully curated objects. It’s about the stories that inspire their craft. At Conifer, we value community and building relationships while helping others succeed.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think my love of fostering community and creating relationships with artists and makers ultimately led to my capability to open Conifer. I truly care about supporting other creatives and bringing them to the forefront of my shop. I also have to mention my determination and perseverance. Despite all of the challenges I faced while trying to find my way, I always knew this was my purpose and I never lost sight of my dream.
