Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Benjamin.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Caleb. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Music has been a part of my life as an outlet for me as long as I can remember. I can pinpoint the exact moment that I started on this journey. I had gotten my first guitar because my older brother played guitar and I heard a song called “What Went Wrong” from the band Blink182. I learned that song and started to sing and from then I was hooked. In my later teenage years into my early 20’s music took a back seat in my life I moved out of my mom’s house as soon as I turned 18 and then reality hit with paying rent and being an adult. Fast forward to 24 years of age and I always missed those days, I missed playing at open mics and writing music, my guitar abilities were just coasting along life had gotten in the way of me living.
I started to play open mics again and it lit that fire that I had been suppressing inside of me to make music and pursue those dreams. Music is a labor of love many people think that one song will make them a star or they just need that one person to hear their music. That is a possibility but nowadays there is so much more to music than just having musical talent. As an independent artist, you need to be able to be a jack of all trades in a sense. You are responsible for your brand and image and with social media, you can build it from the ground up. Today as I write this I just released my first album entitled “PERSPECTIVE”. I named it perspective because I believe in being a positive person and for me being open-minded to others’ experiences and opinions have taught me to be happier.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Rejection is a part of music, every person has their own taste and today’s music is a popularity contest in mainstream music. You as a musician need that rejection that taste of failure to grow and change your strategy to present yourself in ways others can relate to. It’s a constant evolution of yourself that takes serious work and time. I am still working hard to figure it out after years of trial and error.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I write and record acoustic music, my goal is to try and help people realize that we are all more similar than different as humans. My lyrics can be taken as dark or depressing but I just want to catch the listener’s ears. I don’t want to write popular music and follow the trends of today I will continue as myself as I want and if can help others through whatever it is that music can help then that’s a success for me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I am the youngest of six children who were born into a family with an alcoholic father and a religious zealot mother, you can call that bad luck perhaps. That was a challenging start but more often than not its the lot that many receive in life. That “bad luck” made me who I am today, it made me push and push because I know that hard work pays off its the story of my life.
