Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Mowery.
Carly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved being creative and doing crafts. Whenever I went to Hobby Lobby, I saw the cutest home decor signs and my mom would always tell me, “I bet you could make that”. I knew I could make it, but I was always unsure of how “professional” it would look. After experimenting with some wood, stain, and my Cricut, I realized that my products looked very similar to those that I saw in the home decor section. I started making signs, onesies, gifts, and more.
At first, I made signs and shirts for everyone in my family. After the word got out a little more about this new hobby I had, I made a goal to create my own Etsy Shop. I thought of a name, created a logo, and set up my page. Early on, most of the products I made were sold to my family and friends. I slowly became more confident in my own abilities when people I didn’t even know started ordering personalized products from me. After being on Etsy for a few months, I decided to create my own webpage instead. That is how ColorfulCreativityCo.com was created.
I have a passion for giving, creating, and building community. By starting this small business, I have been able to do all of those things and more. When I reflect back to only three short years ago, I never would have imagined that I would be where I am today. I am a first-grade teacher full time, so this craft business has been the perfect creative outlet when I am not teaching.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I am creating products, I don’t usually think of it as “work”. Like I said, being creative is fun for me. It has been tough, however, juggling this business with my full-time job of being a teacher. The life of a teacher is very busy and demanding, but because I am so passionate about creating my products, I find balance. I think any time you have a side business, there are struggles with balancing the two.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Colorful Creativity Co story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in home decor signs, personalized glassware, onesies, t-shirts, and more. I pride myself in the personalization of my products. When my customers come to me, they have the choice of purchasing a product with a generic message or they can be part of the design process. When they customize a product, they get to choose everything from the colors, to the font, to the size, to the message.
I am most proud that I design all of my products myself and that everything is handmade.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that timing is everything. Although I am lucky to have everything that I do, I am a firm believer that everything in our lives are a part of a bigger plan. I wasn’t ready to have this small business three years ago, but I am ready now.
