Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Robert.
Caroline, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I picked up my parent’s Canon AE-1 film camera when I was 15 years old for my first photography class as a sophomore in high school. I fell in love with the darkroom very quickly and continued my passion into college as I pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art with an emphasis in photography. I was nearing the end of my college career, without a clue as to what I would end up doing after I graduated when I landed a gig assisting a wedding. Then, I fell in love with weddings. I worked for various companies until I graduated and started my own business. Six months post-graduation, I went full time and haven’t looked back since.
Has it been a smooth road?
I struggled with balance as I was starting out. I overbooked myself on numerous occasions and never allowed myself to have a life outside of my job. As much as I loved my career choice, everyone needs a break sometimes. It was a slow learning process, over the years, until I figured out the balance that worked for me.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a destination wedding photographer based out of Denver and Austin that specializes in a documentary approach to weddings with a side of scenic portraits. My off-camera flash gives me notoriety as well as some of the amazing & unique places I’ve had the opportunity to photograph in. I pride myself on being good energy on the wedding day, my ability to see the big picture, and covering every aspect of the wedding day incredibly well. From the moments to the details, to the formals, I want everything to be covered with the skill and dedication that has taken me ten years to achieve. Those three factors set me apart.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is similar to Austin in that it’s young, entrepreneurial, and artistic. That lends both cities to really appreciate photography. With that said, weddings tend to be more seasonal in Colorado allowing many photographers to be part-time and charge a bit less than what I’m used to in Texas. The arts will always be a difficult industry to be a part of so I’m not worried about it in the long run, however. It has to lead me to pursue other genres of photography that I am also now excited about.
