Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Keim.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Carolyn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2016 I had the following to face:
1. Divorced after 27 years due to a husband who had a serious drug addiction. Loss of income, savings, etc… In addition, to a 200,000 hospital bill in which he almost died from kidney failure.
2. Lost both parents while I was taking care of them until they both passed a month apart.
3. Lost my job of nine years due to company closing
4. Lost a brother one month before parents died and in my care
5. Lost my home and moved into a townhome
6. Became an empty nester (least of my stress)
7. I had no idea how to manage finances, budget, invest, complete tax returns, or deal with insurance.
I knew I had to make a change so also in 2016: I went back to school at age 56 and earned a Masters in Nutrition. I work as a nutrition therapist both for a doctor and I have my own practice. Both are successful.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not a smooth road at all. Living with a drug addict you never want to come home. I had two boys in high school during the time of his addiction and I had to be both mother and father. Financially we were strapped and I found that he had credit card bills with numerous interest and late fees. The amount was unbelievable and this alone created so much stress. He went through four jobs in five years. Every day was a struggle.
Once I got divorced, I then had to face losing three family members who all were in my care. Trying to adjust to being single and having this added stress really made things tough. In addition, I became the executor to all three estates and then I had a brother decide to sue me for his own personal bitter reasons (later he dropped this as his lawyers told him he did not have a case). All of this while going to school to start a new career. My past job was teaching college courses on-line. I lost this job due to the school closing a political thing in California. I knew it would be difficult to another job in this field. Due to our financial status from drug use, I had to find a new career path.
I am the type of person who wants to make a difference in other people’s lives. I just felt that if I could make people feel better through changes in diet, I could make that difference. So far, I have helped many people get healthy. I’ve had numerous people tell me I have made such a difference in their lives. My job is so rewarding and even though it was a tough road to get here. I know I’m doing something that makes it all worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a nutritionist. I work with all types of illnesses from digestive issues, mental and emotional health, fertility & pregnancy, weight loss, family health, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and numerous other conditions.
Diet and proper supplementation have helped many of my clients improve their health. I offer a very sensitive and understanding approach. I also use my skills as an educator to educate my clients so that any changes I make will be life long changes. I was always worried about my age in this industry. It actually has worked to my advantage. My experience has helped me to understand my client’s issues and I know how to adjust every diet plan I create to be individualized and custom to their own personal issues.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is not defined by a dollar amount. True success comes from people telling you that you have made a difference in their lives.
