Meet Carrie Leigh of Rocky Rex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Leigh.

Carrie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Rocky Rex is an offshoot of Chicago Rex, the original resource of recreation recommendations in Chicago and beyond. Rocky Rex seeks to find fun things to do around Denver and the greater Front Range of Colorado. Our topics include arts and culture, sports and outdoor recreation, family-friendly adventures, and the best places to eat and drink. We are new to Colorado and building our audience and recommendations list, which will include lots of fun and exotic activities you’ll be intrigued to try.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, the best part about getting Rocky Rex up and running has been researching and going to the various activities as a newbie to Denver. I’ve taken my dog Teek, aka the Branch Manager, to a brewery 5k and the flea market, have participated in a skeeball league, went to a Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga class, played 18 holes at Urban Putt, and spent time with friends at Stanley Market to name a few. I’m continually excited about all the fun activities Denver has to offer, especially as summer comes around! The current challenges are getting the word out about Rocky Rex, curating a great list of recreation recommendations, and avoiding writer’s block. We appreciate VoyageDenver helping us share our story.

Rocky Rex – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We strongly believe that an active lifestyle and social interaction are two critical factors that support long term physical and mental health. Our mission is to encourage and support people in the community to get out and do fun things for their own health, as well as to support local businesses.

Brain health is a really important issue to me personally and something that impacts many people, whether that’s through their own struggles or the struggles of loved ones. Trying and learning new things and staying active promote brain health. What sets us apart is the breadth of recreation recommendations that we cover. We research over 50 activity types on an ongoing basis and are always looking for new ways of recreating.

What were you like growing up?
As a kid, I liked to dress in crazy outfits that didn’t match to, as I told my grandma when she was babysitting me, ‘freak out my teacher!’ For a while every day before first grade I stuck my hair in the drinking fountain and made my half ponytail stand straight up like a unicorn horn, so I guess you could say I’ve always been a bit of a wild card. My parents encouraged me to participate in several sports, which I think is why I’m prone to action and love trying new things. My dream job was to become an inventor. We went to Taco Bell a lot. I started hoarding straws from Taco Bell and created this baton-like toy with the straws and yarn and created a game out of it. I never filed a patent or named the game, but continue to eat at Taco Bell sometimes.
