Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Stiltner.
Cassandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from college with a degree in drawing and painting. As I was doing my first exhibits I had a couple photos out for sale. I found that people were buying my photos but not my paintings. At first, I was upset, because, hey I went to school for painting. But, as time went on I realized I loved photography and food/product photography especially.
There are not many jobs where creative people can use those skills, and as a parent of a young kid (when I started), I was able to balance a new photography career and having a young kid. As my business and family have grown I see it as a gift that I’m able to be both creative and have a family! Mostly I work with food and natural products companies. I love hearing about what’s going on in natural foods and products. And, I work with some amazing people!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve been lucky that I’ve been able to grow my business slowly, and that has taken the stress out of starting a new business. I’ve had some great help along the way from nonprofits like Mi Casa Resource Center to other local photographers. For me, being able to grow my business slowly has taken some of that stress away as well as allowed me to really specialize in the field of photography that I enjoy most.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a commercial food and natural products, photographer. I tell stories about food, about small natural brands and large brands. I am usually involved in more than just taking the photos. So, from planning a shoot, delving into what makes a brand tick and how to portray that. I love the planning part almost as much as the actual photoshoot!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m really enjoying working with some great local professionals to curate photoshoots that tell a story about a particular brand– both on location and in the studio. I’m looking forward to continuing that work with people I love! My interest in creating not just photographs, but stories and small sets, that create a sense of space and a feeling about each brand is something that I am really looking forward to doing more of.
