Today we’d like to introduce you to Cous.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cous. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been involved with and surrounded by music pretty much my whole life. I was fortunate to be exposed to a lot of music greats growing up like The Beatles, Bill Withers, Fleetwood Mac, and John Prine, among many others. For me, it just felt natural to want to play the music I was listening to. I’ve always been a singer, but I started playing piano when I was little by stealing my sister’s music books they used in their lessons and teaching myself. I did the whole theatre and choir thing throughout school and discovered guitar along the way…things kind of snowballed from there and I started writing songs and playing random little shows. I have a love for performing and playing with the energy you can create in that space. It is really special. I’ve been involved with and collaborated on a few different projects, but I’ve been writing and performing as Cous for about a year and half now – the moniker comes from a family nickname I’ve had since I was young.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve honestly been fortunate to have a pretty smooth road all things considered, though I have struggled at times with the vulnerability that comes with being an artist. You get out there and bear your soul in a lot of ways, so it can sometimes be hard to hear negative comments or see a stank face in the audience. Though at the end of the day, you’re never going to please everyone so you’ve got to shake that stuff’. I don’t make music with the sole intention of pleasing other people; I make music to help narrate things in my life and society that I otherwise can’t find the right words for. So I start there and hopefully after it all comes together, others vibe with it too!
Tell us more about your work.
I’m a music artist/singer-songwriter named Cous! I’m a Colorado native making Americana-esque music. I released my debut EP ‘Peripatetic’ last fall, which is a compilation of songs about people and experiences I’ve encountered through travels in recent years. I am also incredibly stoked on the new music I’m working on which will be coming this fall! I have had the opportunity to play at some unique venues in the western US along side incredible acts such as Fruition, Caamp, and The Ballroom Thieves. As far as differentiation goes, I hop around on a lot of various instruments during my sets: acoustic guitar, keyboard, electric guitar, maybe even throw a ukulele in there. That isn’t super common in acts as people usually stick to one defined role in a band. With Cous, you’re in for a whole slew of flavors and sounds.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think to some extent as a newer independent artist, you have to have some luck on your side to really start climbing the ladder. You need that small independent venue to take a chance on you, Spotify to add you to that playlist, a talent buyer show up in the audience, etc. Obviously, you need to start with making great music which should speak for itself, but there are still tons of incredible musicians and bands out there who just haven’t had that lucky “break” come around or been in the right place at the right time which is wild. There is still a long road ahead for me, but lady luck has thrown me some nudges thus far which I am grateful for. I’m a believer in karma and what goes around comes around, so I think “luck” will eventually come to those who merit it. In the interim, be a good person, be kind to one another and live your best life.
