Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Gregory.
Catherine, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, this story has two distinct parts. As a founder and CEO of Modern Wisdom Press, I work with a wide range of talented professionals supporting them to birth their books into the world. From financial planners to spiritual teachers, from executive leadership coaches to men’s and women’s health advocates, I am inspired every single day by our clients’ work in the world. It is a real honor to help each of these leaders in building their business and expanding their impact through their book-writing and publishing journey.
But I haven’t always worked in publishing. Back in 2001, after a decade-long career as an editor and writer for an international publishing company, I was feeling burned out and in search of creative inspiration. So I booked a trip to Mexico for a week-long yoga retreat, and while there, I spontaneously signed up for a healing session with a traditional Mayan shaman. That session became a huge turning point in my life and my career. As a result of the healing session, I soon became pregnant with my first child and eventually left my career in publishing to begin a healing arts practice. I studied with various traditional healers and became certified in a number of alternative healing modalities to be able to help women who were struggling with their fertility. I spent the past 15 years in private practice supporting women on the path to motherhood, and in 2018, I wrote my award-winning first book which shares the highly successful holistic fertility method I developed over the years.
When I finished the last chapter of my book on Mother’s Day, I realized my readers were feeling heartbroken on this day and needed my book sooner rather than later. So, I decided to self-publish for this reason, and my digital book launched and became a bestseller on Labor Day. It was literally nine months after I wrote that last chapter that my print book was in my hand, and then it hit me: The birthing metaphors were no coincidence. Interestingly, birthing a book was much like birthing a baby, and the method I’d been using for my fertility clients was applicable to the creative journey of the author as well. That epiphany was the moment that my two professional worlds merged, and Modern Wisdom Press and the Birth Your Book program were born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it was not a smooth road. I’d wanted to write my book for years, and I would start and stop the project again and again. It kept getting put on the back burner. I had good excuses. I went through a divorce. I was single-parenting two teenagers. I was trying to build my business to support my family. But then I realized I will always have excuses. The calling to finally finish my book was strong. I knew my readers needed me to stop making excuses, and so that’s what I did. I got the accountability and support to finally publish it.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
We are a boutique book-publishing company. We support entrepreneurs, coaches and healers in their book-writing process so they have accountability and structure to finish their book in nine weeks. We also provide our authors with a full-spectrum publishing service that allows them to keep all of the royalties and full ownership of their book. Our program is unique because it addresses the personal obstacles and fears most authors face as they embark upon launching their book into the world. We help our authors determine their goals in order to write the right book and combine that with the necessary structural components of writing a top-notch book that will transform their readers’ lives. We are most proud of our authors, because they are truly making a positive impact in the world by sharing their wisdom and expertise.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We have a great team of creative visionaries and are continuing to build our company. We are excited to be of service to a larger community of authors who are aligned with our mission to elevate consciousness and make a positive impact in the world.
