Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Handley.
Hi Chad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Dr. Chad’s passion and education with health promotion began with his elementary school PE teacher who exemplified healthy practices in his personal life, as well as promoted activity and motion in his students and community. The value of giving the right kind of attention to one’s body was cemented in Dr. Chad at that early age. He took that passion with him to Arizona State University where he completed his B.S. in ASU’s prestigious Exercise Science/Kinesiology program while also exploring the human condition with a minor in Anthropology. He worked in higher education and insurance for the next several years before he was drawn back to his core passion of creating healthy, functional humans. Chiropractic’s “healing comes from within” philosophy was right in line with Dr. Chad’s belief systems about creating lifelong healthy practices. He graduated Cum Laude from Cleveland University – Kansas City’s Doctorate of Chiropractic Program and his life and the lives of his 1,000’s of patients were forever changed.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No. As noted in the previous section, this was not a direct path. Like so many young people, I graduated and was immediately swept up by the need and desire to start working so took the first real job I was offered as a counselor in higher education. Between that experience and a history of selling Cutco Cutlery, I was convinced my skill set was in sales and pursued a career in life and health insurance. Unfortunately, many segments of that industry are less than admirable actors, and I was unable to reconcile that career with my conscience.
I had to soul search back to my roots and training, doing right by others through health promotion. In the ten years since I had graduated college, my older brother had completed a masters and doctorate in economics to become a professor at the University of Michigan. Of course, this meant that I too should probably be a doctor (I say jokingly), but how and what to do was the real question. This led me to chiropractic’s, “healing from within,” and “own your own health,” philosophies. It was 100% in line with how I felt, and how I felt people should view their personal health. I moved from Phoenix back to Kansas City in my early 30’s to launch my new career.
To save money, I moved in with father and step mom who conveniently lived 20 minutes from the school. Little did I know at the time, reacquainting myself with family, having meals together at night, and that feeling of being supported that only close friends and family can provide was missing in my life. I made a new discovery on this journey to become a doctor, “People are better together.” In practice now, I try to incorporate that principle into our staff and patients, involving our office in the celebrations and losses we experience together. When the community needs help, we will intervene where we can. When a patient is excited about their home garden, we buy them a t-shirt that says, “We love dirt!” I can’t overemphasize how much fun it is to genuinely care about people.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Connected Health Center – Centennial?
We are Centennial and Aurora’s home for Chiropractic and Massage care. The most important part of our office is that we strongly believe you are “Never too old, Never too sick, Never too broken, to start taking care of yourself.” We offer an environment that is accepting and welcoming to all people of all types because no matter who you are, there’s a benefit in chiropractic care for you.
This office is set apart by our two table approach to care, meaning we deliver stellar adjustments along with additional soft tissue care through various modalities, hence a chiropractic table staffed by myself the chiropractor and a therapy table staffed by our rehab specialist. Unlike many Colorado chiropractors who deliver great adjustments and call it a day, we know that your body may also require stretching, mobilization, realistic home care recommendations, and sometimes just the opportunity to express your joys and frustrations of the day, week, or year. Given our attentive nature of care, you will always feel heard and be given the opportunity to share any new issues on each visit that need to be addressed outside of what you may have come in for on your first visit.
Our primary services include chiropractic adjustments, rehab and soft tissue care, massage, and decompression therapy. We accept almost all major medical insurance, as well as personal injury cases.
The Connected Health brand is present in four states and growing. We are a breakaway group from a huge national chiropractic brand that had become too focused on the business and had 100% lost track of patient care and provider needs. Consequently, our patients find providers excited to be at work and an office environment where everything may just seem personally curated for you.
What matters most to you?
Access to healthcare providers! Nobody wakes up in the morning saying, “What can I do to be unhealthy today?” However, many people do wake up without a health agenda because they don’t know any better. We all need guidance and encouragement to make the best health choices. Unfortunately, primary care providers are not able to fill that void.
Let me be clear, PCPs provide an incredible service and every day they show up to the office they benefit their patients. We see patients on a weekly to monthly basis and have multiple touch points throughout the year to ask, “How’s not smoking going?” “Did that letter we wrote get you the more appropriate chair for work?” “How are you holding up after losing your dog last week?”
Access to a healthcare provider means having a place to answer your questions about a diagnosis that wasn’t fully explained or an imaging report that may as well be in Latin. Going to the doctor can be scary. Oftentimes we leave more confused and scared than when we came in, and then Google makes it even worse! Again, PCPs are doing their best, but many are too busy because they have to be… let’s blame the system. If you have healthcare questions, bring them to us. Anxiety will only make things worse so let us fill that gap with good information AND get you adjusted.
In conclusion, what matters to me most is making sure that the whole person gets addressed while on the journey of solving their pain. Chiropractors are uniquely positioned to do this because we have more access to our patients and they have more access to us!
