Meet Green Belly Foods in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Stewart.

Charlie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The dream started in 2014 with Juan: a single father trying to make ends meet with food stamps. One evening he cooked up a batch of his Guatemalan mother’s secret hot sauce and shared it with his close friends. They went ecstatic over the unique flavor! That night they pushed him to enter the local farmers market. Juan knew he would do better with a team and enlisted his cousin Charlie who consulted and coached Green Belly Foods to double sales every year. They have organically grown from one market to over 250 events!

Green Belly’s sales now spread across the world through ecommerce and Amazon. In 2018 they entered Natural Grocers and in 2020, they entered 100 King Soopers and 33 Whole Foods with distribution by LoCo Foods, Italco and DPI. Growth is enabling Green Belly to pursue its vision of empowering the world. This vision is materializing as an end of year tour of Guatemala that brings funds to support children, education and regenerative agriculture – join their journey!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been rough, the battle out of poverty is never easy especially when you are running off $1 margins and our founder’s son gets diagnosed with cancer. The key is focusing on what you can do today and to keep moving forward.

What were you like growing up?
Juan is a revolutionary and believes we can do better together and with each other. Charlie is high energy and takes risks.
