Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Kloss.
Chelsea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Southern girl born and raised, from a family full of incredible educators and a spirited entrepreneurial father. Getting a degree in interior design made me a bit of a black sheep and leaving the Dallas area was just as big of a shock to my family. In 2005, upon finishing my degree in Interior Design, I had a partnership opportunity in Austin and with so much growth in the state’s capital, I found myself busy designing custom homes, working on boutique commercial spaces and multi-family developments alike. I started my own business in 2008 and my projects had me winning awards and seeing my work in nationally published magazines.
My SECOND start was in 2017, when my husband, Taylor, and I made the decision to prioritize our passion for travel. I wanted to explore the idea of working remotely as an interior designer so my business coach and I developed a plan to do just that. After 30 days in Bali, six months on a U.S. road trip in our tiny Airstream (aka The Snug) and a four month stint in Mexico you could say we successfully reestablished how and where we were spending our time. And best of all, my business was thriving!
Successfully working from anywhere in the world meant that my roots in Austin were no longer a requirement so we decided to pursue a dream to be near the mountains. “Welcome to Colorful Colorado”… you had me at colorful! A focus on outdoor adventures, nature and mountain time made it an easy choice for our active family and Denver’s thriving development was a huge plus.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Funny you use the reference of a road because so much of my story is based around travel! Smooth road? No… but interesting and exciting and unexpected, YES! Starting a business was tough initially but I was so naive and young, I’m not sure I truly recognized the ambition in that. Later in life, taking an established business on the road definitely rocked the boat and pushed me out of my comfort zone. The initial work/travel concept was tricky too… like being half a day ahead of your clients in time zones. Then there was living in 100 square feet with my husband and our rescue pup Bianca, navigating cross-country with an Airstream in tow and desperately trying to find the elusive wifi. That was NOT easy but it was one heck of an adventure with incredible memories made and life lessons galore.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
As an Interior Designer, I work with custom home builders, architects, adventurous homeowners, developers and innovative business owners to draw out their vision and facilitate their design from start to finish. If you’re working with me, you aren’t just looking for a killer design, you’re looking to enjoy the process and have a boatload of fun along the way! I’m a fierce advocate for my clients and find my loyalty and concern for their investments to be something that sets me apart from others.
I love curating custom spaces for families to entertain in and capturing the key elements that tell their stories. The commercial spaces I’ve designed, like yoga studios and coffee shops, are distinctive because they have a residential flare to them… they feel like an extension of your home rather than a sterile, commercial box.
My style is definitely eclectic and my appreciation for negative space coupled with bright, fresh color palettes gives my projects an understated yet cheerful persona. I’m most proud of my longevity in business at almost 15 years, continuing to grow and set new standards on what it means to be an interior designer and coupling all of that with my passion for travel.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
Having fully embraced my ability to design without geographical boundaries, I’m excited for the opportunity to serve clients across the globe. I’m working to develop my own line of products inspired by the people, places and traditions I’ve experienced across the 23 countries I’ve explored (and counting). I’d also love to create some beautiful Mountain Modern homes in Colorado and have visions of a rustic modern boutique hotel project in my future.
What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
I didn’t have my own room until I was 12 years old which made GETTING my own room that much more special. I’d make my own wallpaper out of magazine clippings, rearrange my furniture, and soak up the glory of having a space that was MINE. My parents allowed me to unleash my creativity there, so this really became my creative mecca. I guess you could say this was the birthplace of my passion for creating unique spaces.
