Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Weir and Daniel Longworth.
Chris and Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We grew up together back in the Bay Area and both ended up attending CU Boulder. Throughout our time in college, we dabbled with production, DJ-ing and threw a few parties here and there. After messing around for a few years, we still did not really feel a part of the Colorado music scene. Dan AKA Tripleset had the idea of starting a label to build our own community and eventually pitched the idea to Chris aka Weir. From there, we reached out to some producer friends from college, Derdy Harry and Mellisan, and began to build our team of designers, photographers and other creatives. Last spring, we launched our company online, started releasing music and began curating live-music events to showcase the talents of our very own artists, friends and family.
Since then, our artists have had the opportunity to support major artists like Malaa, Chris Lake and Quix at some of Colorado’s most prestigious venues such as Boulder Theatre, Larimer Lounge and The Fox Theatre. Last summer, we collaborated with High Hopes Hammock Co. and Bluebird Botanicals to host a charity music festival in the Rocky Mountains. We set up hammocks around a natural amphitheater in the woods, featured seven up and coming local artists and offered CBD snow cones + tinctures to all who came to support. This was our first major event and we ended up raising $1000 for The Children’s Home Project of Honduras. We plan to continue curating unique live-music experiences and hope to incorporate philanthropy as much as possible.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since the inception of New Something, we have committed to meeting at least once a week as a team to plan out releases, discuss event plans and formulate our marketing strategies. These consistent discussions have been crucial in keeping the company moving as well as motivating each other to create even more – whether that be music, graphics, video, etc… We had plans to host our first Denver showcase as well as another charity music festival at a much larger, more public scale. Unfortunately, this all fell through due to the ongoing COVID19 pandemic and resulted in our team somewhat dispersing around the country to quarantine safely. With all that said, we have been releasing plenty of music, are planning some awesome livestreams and still meet once a week online to continue building the New Something community.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
New Something specializes in music distribution and unique live-music experiences. Our roster of artists produces a wide variety of electronic music styles allowing for a very diverse and special catalog of releases. When it comes to events, we’re never just trying to “throw a party”. We spend hours researching and developing designs and decorations for our stages, we incorporate live visuals and lights as much as we can and overall, strive to produce the highest quality production possible for our community. We also support charitable organizations as much as we can through philanthropic donations at events, livestreams and hopefully merchandise in the near future.
Our whole team at New Something as well as those who support us are really a family. The level of collaboration that we have within our team and those we have met along the way is extraordinary. We are very blessed to work with such a talented and diverse network of musicians, designers and other creatives.
Just one year ago, we did not have a legitimate outlet for our music nor did we feel a part of the Colorado music scene. We struggled to get bookings and had a relatively small network to work with and be inspired by. We’re grateful now to share this network and our outlet that we have created with those who have been in a similar situation.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is a great city to work in. Over the past few years, we have had the pleasure of seeing a wide variety of amazing live music in Denver and Boulder. There is a really awesome energy in the electronic music scene here. You can easily find top-tier artists performing on the same block as smaller, more underground talents. The Denver music scene is built by highly supportive artists and music lovers that are interested in exploring new talent. Colorado is not quite as competitive nor expensive as other areas like Los Angeles or New York. We’re just grateful to be in the middle of such a diverse and open community of electronic music lovers.
