Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Rayfield.
Cindy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a franchise broker so I have access to a lot of different franchise businesses that I help people invest in. I had owned a couple of different businesses in the past and was looking to do something else but didn’t know what that would be. In the meantime, one of the franchises I represent had an existing location in Lakewood that was being sold because the owner was moving out of state. It happened to be a children’s hair salon called Cookie Cutters Haircut for Kids. I was familiar with it because I had clients invest in it in different areas of Colorado. I was showing the resale to several people but none of them was ready to take the leap. My husband, Robb, thought that we should seriously consider it for our own investment. So we did!
I have grown children but remember well how disappointed I was when my oldest son got his first haircut. There was no salon for children when he was little so we went to a local shop, and the stylist didn’t really want to cut his hair. We walked out with a disappointing bowl cut. That memory is vivid still and I don’t want other parents and kids to feel like they have to put up with a boring, adult haircuts for their kids. Everyone needs and deserves a haircut and Cookie Cutters is the perfect place for kids. We have little cars and planes for the kids to sit in, and a big firetruck basin for shampoos. Every cutting station has a TV for Netflix and Disney Plus to keep the kid’s attention. We recently opened our second location in Highlands Ranch. Cookie Cutters has over 105 locations across the US and is set to open over 170 more in next few years. We are super proud to be owners of our own kids salon in the Denver metro area.
Has it been a smooth road?
Even as a former business owner, I had to learn the ropes of the salon industry. Building a solid team that is reliable and passionate about kids haircuts was the first item of business. Any business owner knows that hiring and maintaining good employees is a challenge. In the salon industry, owners have to build a team of good stylists who can work together efficiently. Add on to that, I had to find stylists who are good with kids. I have a great team now in both my salons but it took two years to build that.
Another struggle has been growing the Lakewood store with strong marketing, advertising and community presence. It was a big undertaking. But if business ownership was easy, everyone would be doing it!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Cookie Cutters Haircuts for Kids specializes in kid’s haircuts! We help parents save their kids from boring, adult haircuts. It’s the kind of experience that every adult would have loved to have when they were kids. We take walk-in clients but most of our clientele set appointments. We have online booking and an app for convenient appointment setting. We think kids deserve appointments just like their parents. All Cookie Cutters locations have a playground in the waiting area to let kids play and burn off energy.
When it’s time for their cut, they get to choose a car to sit in and a show to watch on TV. Not every kid likes a haircut and sometimes just the distraction of their favorite TV show gets them through it. When the kids are done with their haircuts, they get to pick out a balloon and a lollipop before walking out the door.
We are super proud that a lot of families bring their kids to Cookie Cutters when their children have sensory issues or special needs. Our stylists learn to work with kids of all backgrounds. We get referrals from moms groups, special needs associations and Children’s Hospital.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
We love living in Denver! My husband and I are both Colorado natives and feel strongly about this city and state. As a Colorado girl at heart, I wouldn’t live anywhere else. I love Denver because it has all the amenities of a metropolitan city, but we are just a short drive from the mountains or plains. What I don’t like is the traffic! We live in a very popular city and with that comes the symptoms of growth, such as traffic and congestion. But I still wouldn’t change it.
