Meet Dakota Hindman of Matrescence Doula Services in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Hindman.

Dakota, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in high school, my mother gave me Ina May Gaskin’s famous book, “Spiritual Midwifery”. After leafing through its pages and seeing image after image of hippies on The Farm birthing their babies in buses, I knew at that moment that I needed to be a midwife. I knew I needed to work with birthing people and their families during one of the most transformational experiences in life.

It is deep within my bones that I am called to hold space for birthing families. I started at a young age and did everything I could to gain a broad spectrum of experiences to make me the best doula and student midwife I can be today.

I have attended births from the hot, thick air of Bali, Indonesia to yurt-births on farms in rural Vermont to hospital births resulting in emergency Cesareans. I have also held space for loss and grief and am passionate about full spectrum work, as well. I have gathered many different tools from many great experiences, teachers, and families on my path and I am humbled.

I am humbled by the power of birth and death. By the power of birthing people and their families bringing their Truth into this world with so much courage and grace. It is an honor to serve in this way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Birth work is not an easy profession. There are many unknowns in the world of birth – from serious complications to loss/death to mental illness… it is not easy to hold energy so big. It is not easy to be on-call 24/7 for a birth. It is not easy to tend to a birthing family for days on end. There are many political, social and spiritual elements that I struggle with in this line of work. It is not for the faint of heart and has pushed me to recommit to what I love over and over and over again. I have wanted to quit many times, but continue to show up to what I meant to do in this life. And it’s SO worth it!

Please tell us about Matrescence Doula Services.
At Matrescence Doula Services, we believe that birth is a sacred Rite of Passage. It is sacred because it holds all of existence. Birth is a profound ritual that women have been dancing with for millions of years. All those who have walked before and all those who will come after are informing the process of the unfolding. A child is born, and so is a mother. Matrescence (according to anthropologist Dana Rafael) is the birth of a mother – and that is why we named our business that. Because it is with love and presence that we hold our clients during that Sacred Transition into parenthood.

We have a deep trust in the spiritual process of birth that lays the foundation for the space we hold. We are guided to work quietly, patiently. We call forth a container of listening and receiving, out of which erupts the most primal, spiritual, human power that lives inside the person in labor. Through our personal experiences, we have learned to hold a space of safety, love, and trust so that our clients can invoke the strength and courage needed to birth their babies.

We are not your average doulas. We are Ceremonialists. Space-holders. Birth-Keepers. Songstresses. Medicine Women. Embodiments of the Rising Feminine on our planet at this time! Let’s sit together and create something beautiful!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would’ve taken a business class right at the beginning! Haha! Learning the business side of things has been the biggest challenge for me. Money, social media, marketing, promotion, etc… I just want to go to births! 😉
