Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Fox.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My path was surely not a straight one! I started in business and marketing. Then, moved into the high-end hospitality business. Later, I created and hosted an online educational video series and after looked into starting a charter school. Finally, I got to a point where I reassessed everything. There was nothing in my past that I wanted to keep. I needed to find a sense of purpose, which I didn’t have back then. So, I sold everything and went to Patagonia, in Argentina, where I stayed for six months, camping on Valdes Peninsula. This is where I started to write and do photography. The story I started to write and photograph was about our ourselves, nature and our relationship to it. This is what I have been doing for 10 years. Originally from Quebec in Canada, in the last 20 years, I have lived in New York City, Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Munich in Germany and Buenos Aires in Argentina. My book FEEL THE WILD, published by Rocky Mountain Books is coming out in October. I am going to be on a book tour with Arc’teryx, Lexus, and Fujifilm and will be in Denver on November 6th.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
More like a logging road, with sometimes the road being washed away by a flood, or blocked by an avalanche or again fallen trees, and let’s not forget countless flat tires. That is just the life of an entrepreneur/artist! You take the off beaten path, trading stability for freedom, forging ahead towards a goal that seems impossible or against all odds because you believe in a vision. I am not a big believer in “finding your passion” – what I believe in and encourage people is “find your purpose”. It is your purpose that keeps you going, even when the shit hits the fan. That purpose can be your family, stability, freedom, creativity, whatever it is, it is bigger than you.
Please tell us about A.P.E. Square – what should we know?
Everything I do is rooted in my artist statement or if you want my business mission statement: DIALOGUE & INTROSPECTION THROUGH INTIMACY & PERSPECTIVE. I use my stories, art, and photography for the audience to experience nature as a framework for personal transformation. I want people to reconnect with life, themselves and nature. I believe that nature has the power to Nurture, Awaken, Transcend, Uplift, Restore and Elevate the human spirit. One of the things I am most proud of is my non-profit WILD.ECO, through which I mentor young adults and fund month-long wilderness immersion camps for disadvantaged students.
I am also launching two lifestyle brands, based on my two mantras: FEEL THE WILD & STOP BREATHE RELAX LISTEN. “Feel the wild” is about an intimate and powerful experience with the world. “Stop Breathe Relax Listen” is about empowering the inner-self. Think of those two mantras as complementary energies.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
It all depends on what is your definition of success? Is it to be rich? Have a great family? Growing spiritually? I think what is important is for each to find their own personal priorities and be authentic with who you are and want to be. That said, I believe in a set of values and principles that I am confident can build a sustainable, positive, productive and empathetic society. I named those values the Bill of Nature. This bill sets the tone and direction on how citizens of this world want to move forward and into the future. It is not about measuring or quantifying Nature or Life, but about creating a framework for our growth, a set of values that we prioritize culturally, and individually. They are:
Humbleness NOT Righteousness
Better NOT Easier
Respect NOT Protect
Consciousness NOT Senseless
Reciprocity NOT Opportunistically
Community NOT Individuality
Slower NOT Faster
Local NOT Global
Accountability NOT Dishonesty
Long Term NOT Short Term
Forward NOT Backward
Optimism NOT Pessimism
Dynamic NOT Static
Evolution NOT Perfection
