Meet David Cook

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Cook.

David, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Aspen in 2005 as the publisher of the Aspen Daily News, after five years as the publisher I left to start a client-facing agency but life kept leading me back to media. I’ve launched regional broadcast, glossy print, newsprint, digital and social channels.

In 2011 I was named the GM of a resort-based TV network called Plum TV (GM of the mountain region overseeing general operations in Vail, Aspen, Telluride and Sun Valley, ID) but the writing was already on the wall for Plum and that’s when I bought broadcast equipment and rights to serve as the official broadcast partner of Aspen Snowmass, we’re now the Outside TV affiliate in Aspen. In September of 2017, we bought the Aspen Daily News and have been focused on hyper-local multi-media ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
The media landscape is changing at a break-neck pace. While we’re insulated form many of the dangers that lurk in metropolitan markets, we’re certainly susceptible to a litany of problems that exist in this low-margin, high-profile industry.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
We are content producers and distributors that serve a resort based cliental in most likely the smallest global media market in the world. Aspen is certainly a world-class destination but the beauty of this town is its soul. People are very involved in the democratic process and locals don’t take what we have for granted. Any hyper-local news organization serves as the 4th of state and something of a watchdog and that is certainly what I’m the most proud of.

Our multi-media focus is most certainly what sets us apart. We’ve launched a weekly paper serving the greater Basalt area, a Podcast serving the stakeholders of Aspen, a glossy magazine focusing on “The Best Things in Life,” and our TV station that carries both Outside TV programming as well as our live, daily morning show.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It will have “changed” by the time this article is published.
