Meet David Hobbs of Hobbs Art in Loveland

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Hobbs.

David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved doing art, as a kid I feel like I was always drawing and as I grew up I was one of the lucky ones whos followed their imagination. After high school, I began taking painting more seriously and have went through many phases starting in abstraction and have found my way into a more illustration style. My artwork went from being created on canvases to today where all my paintings are done on wooden cutouts that are then framed!

Has it been a smooth road?
With artwork, I don’t believe there is a smooth road, but the passion behind it makes it worth the struggle. I think my biggest obstacle is I that am red/green color blind so all my paintings must look a bit different to me than to most people! Luckily I have a great girlfriend who helps with color selection when commissions come in needing very specific colors! Besides something, I can’t control art has its constant struggles like finding an audience that loves your work and trying to get exposure!

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
The artwork that I am recognized for are cut out of wood, then painted and finally framed! They’re mounted a half-inch above the backgrounds on risers which give a really fun look! My content is all over the place but usually includes animals and floral elements and have a whimsical sense to it! I love mixing random objects that I find nostalogic into paintings mixed with creatures that I find fascinating!

I’m proud of the custom work I get to do for people that can be taken from their generic idea and produced into a painting they can enjoy in their home! Commissioned work is always a challenge but I love being approached by someone that loves my cutout style and wants something special and unique for themselves!!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that there is so much art and the massive mural projects that are always in the works! I love seeing well-executed paintings on a large scale that brightens up a building! Denver is definitely a chaotic place, Loveland is growing fast but is definitely more our speed!
