Today we’d like to introduce you to David Rupert.
David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started out as a small group of writers — just four or five of us — who met monthly to share tips and ideas. We did this for several years. Until then we had a name change and a different focus and we experienced some quick growth. We grew to 30 and then one of our members asked that we start a group in Littleton. We did and that grew. And soon, we were launching groups all along the Front Range. Today we have nine active groups and about 700 writers. We hold a yearly conference that has drawn 250-300 people each year. We are now the largest Christian writing community in the United States.
Has it been a smooth road?
Writing is not math. It’s a series of questions in your mind and endless pursuit to find the answers. And you are never sure that are doing the right thing. Every writer asks the question, “Does anyone care?” Running an organization for writers who are uncertain of their own ability is heavy on encouragement and cheering the little things.
To meet this challenge, we don’t focus on publishing success as measured by Amazon charts or publishing deals. Success is when you use your God-granted gift to help meet the needs of others, to help change the world.
Getting writers — and any creative to be honest — to rethink about their gift in these terms isn’t easy, because so much of what gets pumped into us revolves around compensation. But that’s not the end goal.
I think that’s a lot of our success is the realization that a writer needs to write and that brings fulfillment.
We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Writers on the Rock focuses on enabling writers to live out their calling to change the world. We are different from other writers organizations that focus on the commercial aspect solely.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Nashville attracts musicians.
Los Angeles attracts actors.
Colorado attracts writers.
There is something here that is unleashing the written word. It is not only an opportunity for this writers’ community, it is our responsibility to encourage and equip this rising group of gifted communicators.
No other city has as many Christian communicators than Denver.

This group has been my lifeline. Yes, writing is a lonely craft, but to have others who are walking the same road, with some of the same issues, is a gift as we come together as family. David Rupert had a vision, ran with it, and now is continuing to give our community a home for writers. We celebrate our God-given talents whether we are ever published or not. He is our Rock Star!
