Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Lincoln.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always enjoyed taking photographs. I was the one in the family who, when everyone got together for holidays, would be the one to take photos. In 1998, my dad died unexpected at the age of 52. my dad was my biggest fan and a huge source of love and support for me. All I have of him are the photos I took and they are priceless to me.
After he died, I went into a big depression for a long time. My kids were young when he died. We have a gap of ten years, where we have no family portraits. Once I realized that I insisted that we get a family portrait done. That is when I picked up my camera again in 2008.
It wasn’t until another four years later, when my son was in high school, playing sports, that I started regularly taking my camera to his games. I enjoyed capturing the action and seeing the joy of the other parents getting to see photos of their kids when I shared them.
In 2011, My daughter was getting married and we needed a photographer. The wife of the associate pastor at our church was doing some professional photography work so we hired her to take photographs at the wedding. They were so beautiful and the thought occurred to me that perhaps I could make some money in photography as well.
In May 2012, I set up my photography business and have been working, learning, and growing ever since.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a business in the photography industry is no easy feat. I have been working at it for six years, and I still have far to go to get to be where I want.
It takes time. It takes practice. It takes having the right equipment, and it takes continued learning To grow as an artist.
I have been so blessed to have connected with other photographers through the Colorado Springs Creative Photography Group. I have also developed friendships with two wonderful women photographers, Jessica Vallia and Shannon Squires, who are great mentors and teachers. I have attended several of their workshops over the last few years and the education and skills training they have shared has helped me grow as an artist tremendously!
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
As I live in a smaller community, I photograph a variety of projects. I photograph families, maternity, high school seniors, and weddings mostly. Once in a while, I photograph a newborn or children. I have been hired for creative projects as well as business and commercial projects as well.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My ultimate plan is to have a commercial studio location on Main Street in Canon City, where I live.
