Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Raymond.
Dawn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business very slowly, funding it from a part-time job I had at Google as one of their massage therapists. I had a little kiddo in school which kept me from being able to just run on out and “get a job”. This probably ended up being a good thing as I am too creative to be employable (totally kidding, future bosses). I pretty much built as I went (and am still building).
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a smooth road but it’s been a slow road. Starting from nothing and building- especially with a lot of restrictions time and capital wise- is kind of excruciating when you would love to be able to just go full bore and build the crap outta something.
Bloom Skin Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My biz name is Bloom Skin Studio and I focus on skin and body care, but predominantly, I seem to focus on stress reduction. This is probably because I understand how crippling stress (and despair, depression and overwhelm) can really be.
I typically do facials that include more massage than you usually get in a facial which makes it super effective for combatting stress and giving your body and your psyche a much-needed break. I don’t usually do massage as a stand-alone service because it’s not something I am passionate about. I will be looking for someone in the near future who is passionate to collaborate with because while I don’t love to do massage, I believe it is valuable for wellness and stress management as well.
My secondary focus is actually skincare. I love to work with clients who want to commit time and effort into creating healthy skin. I also love the idea of transformation and seeing what’s possible in the realm of personal growth and change, and this also applies to the skin. We have so many tools nowadays to create change on so many levels and in so many different arenas, I hate to see people let the opportunity slip by to improve something about themselves that holds them back psychologically, like acne. It’s cool to conquer some of the smaller challenges (like learning to take care of your skin) because it gives you the confidence to focus on bigger things once you’ve learned you can master some of the smaller things.
I am really proud of the fact that I’ve built this business from scratch. Literally. I am proud that I am able to offer a place for good people to unwind and recharge. I am also proud of the fact that my daughter, who does barbering in the space right next to me, has the same values for treating people with honor and respect. We just want to leave people feeling better than when they walked in the door, and I feel like we do that on the regular.
What sets Bloom apart? I like to think it’s the fact that we don’t fear monger our clients. We don’t make them feel that aging is a curse. We don’t point out flaws. We don’t criticize their home care. We don’t shame them for making the choices they’ve made thus far. Yes, we will educate, but we like to be gentle when it comes to education because I trust that people make the best decisions they can with the information they have. As a matter of fact, quite often discussing skincare becomes a collaboration because of the abundance of information available to my clients make a lot of them quite well-versed in the language of skincare. It’s pretty cool.
As far as the services we offer, we are able to provide things like microneedling, chemical peels and all of that, but these are definitely not services you administer willy nilly. We like to have an objective for the services we provide and also like to help the client understand that one service will not make significant changes. You need to continue to do treatments that help the skin renew itself and stay resilient.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I am really thankful for all of the teachers I’ve had over time, both virtual and in person. I feel like there is always more to know, so I keep an open mind and open ears so that I can sponge up all the info I possibly can. Gotta say, I really appreciate my landlord at the building I am in now. It’s a quaint little place and he’s a great guy. He is also looking for more tenants (wink wink).
