Meet Dory Johnson of Skin Care With Dory in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dory Johnson.

Dory, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being a a very fair-skinned strawberry blond who had spent the 70’s and ’80s worshipping Farrah Fawcett posters, and other tan celebrities and desperately wanting to be tan. I achieved the tan and LOTS of sun damage. So now, My clients know, “I get it.”

Thankfully during my outdoor sports years, I met a Greek Esthetician who changed my life and taught me good solid skincare, She always said,” The first and last thing people see is your Face”. That was the start of my deep caring about skincare.

For 18 years, I worked as professional photojournalist and portrait photographer form18 years running my own business. During that time, I had the opportunity to talk to many people about their very personal hopes and dreams and opinions. Also with portraiture, , I was artistically crafting their image for public and promotional use. From watching the angles, light and their faces, and doing post production I developed a refinement for faces. When the (2008) recession dragged on I decided to pivot in another direction.

Treating others with Microcurrent technology started on my dining room table in Denver. I had returned from Northern California, where skin-care is a big deal. Californians pay attention to their appearance. While there, I met a highly successful and very intelligent woman who did Microcurrent Technology Facial Sculpting. Her machine seemed a bit like a miracle! After a few sessions and much research, I bought the Microcurrent device created by herself and a Nuclear physicist. I started treating clients for Facial sculpting and I was getting a stream of dedicated regular clients. I had no office, no formal protocols and honestly my cat was walking across their chest and they kept coming back. My Brother kept advising ( more like warning) me that I needed a license to work on people’s faces. With the influx of enthusiasm I was getting; I figured I should go to Esthetician School. This was my idea of a great side gig to being a Freelance Professional Photographer.

Esthetician School in Colorado and the curriculum were far more rigorous than I imagined. We studied anatomy, physiology, chemistry, electrical, diseases, sanitation, laws. I fast tracked and ground through the program and graduated. I was happy it was Summer and I could Head back to the cool air of Northern California and decided for torture and fun I would Get a California license. Since I did not know their protocols from schooling there, I hired a Tutor for California Practices and a tutor I brought in from Arizona for Microcurrent to hone my skills.

Then Colorado beckoned: with an ailing longterm friend, and my family there, I headed back. Unfortunately, At the time, there were not any good jobs I could find. So after taking all the advanced training, I could take- before going into medical esthetician work, I decided to open my own practice. Skin Care with Dory was born.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I said to friends”Starting a new business is like learning to snowboard”! Firstly, I needed to build trust with new clients. So. I gave away about more than 50 Facial Treatments to build my skills and their trust. Then ( and now) Clients would come in with the toughest questions and I would be scrambling to figure out stuff I had never thought of. There were systems and laws and business and marketing. At the same time, there were loads of protocols I needed to memorize to be present. With practice, I got the hard skills down to move on to the artistic side. I tell my clients, I think skin care treatments can be kind of like cooking a complicated meal with multiple dishes. Each client’s skin and desires are different and changing. Each ingredient has its flavor and influence. There is a timing and a chemical reason and choice that is accessed while the client gets to relax and leaves rejuvenated.

I will admit, Coming back to Boulder, Colorado and building a new career was a bit of head trip and people who knew me would exclaim“I thought you were a Photographer” and me explain my new direction. I catch people looking at my skin a lot and I am pretty down to Earth with a big dog who keeps me muddy or in Trail clothes and sometimes I do not look the “prefect esthetician part”. I know my clients appreciate my honesty and realness and humor. Yes, I do dress up for work

Please tell us about Skin Care With Dory.
The beauty industry is a billion-dollar industry with LOTS of seduction for quick fixes. Even, at times I want to sign on for a Flash in the Pan ride! Still, what really gets lasting and long term results?

My approach is to be real and be solid and encourage my clients to know what they are doing to be motivated to keep up with their Homecare. I explain everything in detail and what their choices are. I am pretty honest with clients and they appreciate this – so they say.

I am really good at researching and connecting with smart people and solid products and technologies. Through connection threads, I found Viktoria DeAnn Peptides which is brilliantly made and my client’s results are profound. Jan Marini skincare line produces results and Osmosis Skin Care line continues to impress me. I brought in Neurotris Microcurrent, a company with small advertising, but is the only microcurrent technology that read skin impedance and adjusts itself resulting in far superior facial sculpting. I am also the only person in Boulder, Colorado, using this device. Another company I work with is Illuminate LED Light Therapy. The inventor does not put his money into advertising, but instead into his product. I use Pro Cell Microchannelling as it made much more sense to create channels in the skin instead of to drag gyrating needles across. Each Treatment That I perform, I try to discern the most actively effective results-oriented modality. And I truly want my clients to enjoy seeing me and love how they look!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When living with my Dad and step family on a Farm in Branchville ,New Jersey: There were about six kids and we used to pile into my Dad’s Tractor that he attached a trailer and ride to the Yellow Cottage to buy candy with the money we earned from doing Farm chores We would sing songs and the dog would run along side the tractor. It was kind of like a scene out of a Farm sitcom, Yea, It was a sugar reward at the end of some days!
