Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Joey Potter.
Dr. Joey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I knew I wanted to become a dentist around the age of 12 when I saw my mom smile for the first time. She never smiled while I was growing up because of problems with her dental health, causing her to lack the self-confidence to smile. When I saw her smile for the first time after a visit with a dentist, I knew that I could help her, and so many others, by pursuing a career in dentistry.
I was fortunate to participate in undergraduate programs that helped solidify that decision. I was drawn to the ability to be able to change people’s lives through art and science, and dentistry combined aesthetic, art, and science. After dental school at the University of Colorado, I moved to LA to pursue a graduate degree in Orofacial pain in Oral Medicine at the University of Southern California. At USC, not only was I able to learn about dentistry and the best ways to practice, but also the importance of work-life balance. After years of being an associate dentist, today, I am running my own practice in RiNo called The Dental Collective as a general dentist.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The main struggle I faced was transitioning from an associate dentist to a small business owner. Essentially, it’s the transition from being an employee to an employer, making sure I am constantly setting a strong example and being a leader for my team.
Although opening a new business has presented many unique challenges, I have found that by building solid relationships with other local, small businesses and members of the community, we can create success. We can work as a team to achieve our goals together.
We’d love to hear more about your practice.
I own and operate The Dental Collective at 3145 Larimer St. in RiNo. I designed the office to serve as the unique dental home for the neighborhood and to also provide a dental home for the local art and music community.
The front of our office is an open concept art gallery and event space. The back of the office is where I practice dentistry and run my CADCAM digital dental lab. We are extremely proud of our ability to treat each patient based on their unique and individual needs. What sets us apart is that we only see a limited number of patients per day, resulting in one-on-one individual care with the dentist, as compared to more corporate dental offices where interactions with the actual dentist are limited and usually rushed.
It is truly my belief that not only is a patient able to get the best care in a more private, personalized atmosphere, but this method of practice has the ability to reduce or even eliminate dental anxiety in a large majority of patients.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
For 2020, our goal has been to incorporate the music and art community with our practice, as art and music are an essential part of our brand. Starting in April, we are doing bi-monthly First Friday events in our art gallery. We will be featuring artwork from different prominent local artists, as well as live performances from local musicians.
Look out for announcements for future events on June 5, August 7, and October 2. We look forward to showing the community our brand and the unique things we have in store.
