Today we’d like to introduce you to Dunia Shawty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dunia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child, I always was extremely fascinated with creativity. Drawing, Dancing, and Music specifically. Coming from a family of musicians and performers, I was encouraged to spark my interest in whatever I was passionate about, in this case, Music. My mother was my first vocal coach and at the age of four, she had me singing some of the greats, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, the list goes on. At eight, I picked up the drums and hit the ground running. My first public gig was at 12 as a percussionist.
Music became an outlet for me and my expression. At about 15, I met my next vocal coach who got me involved with an all-black barbershop quartet who went on to take first place in our bracket. I took any opportunity I could to exchange my expression with the world from singing in stairwells to performing on stage with musicians. I believe in energy and manifesting what you are looking to receive so at this point in my life, I was connected with a person with a vision for a better world and Menace Port was born.
Menace Port is a networking and marketing company set up to support small businesses and creatives to achieve a better sense of community. As a Menace Port Artist, I’ve been getting properly exposed and offered a platform to do what I do best. My first single is called ‘Yellow’ ft Mockuhmenace. My next project ‘Opening Seam’ I will be presenting to the world this year. I am currently a music major specializing in jazz at MSU Denver. I’m excited to be featured in Voyage and look forward to any and every opportunity the universe is sending my way! ASÈ 🧿🔮 🖖🏿
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Without Pressure, Diamonds do not form. I’ve definitely had my fair share of obstacles presented. I’ve had to deal with producers trying to change my creativity and sound, a lot of people have tried to take advantage of my creativity and lost a lot of friends and support for following what society calls an ‘untraditional’ route. We literally would not have internet, cars, hell bread if someone didn’t allow a thought to sprout to an idea. I believe in pursuing a passion or die trying.
Menace Port – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Menace Port is everything and nothing. It’s the change you want to see in the world starting with local communities. We specialize in community uplift in whatever form that takes. As a company, we are most proud of our first event ‘Nice To Meet You Menace’ an artist showcase and gallery. This was our introduction to the world and the amount of genuine energy exchange and creative exposure was astounding to say the least. The purpose of Menace Port is to inspire and after our event, we have seen a lot of the artists involved be so inspired, they were challenged to grow within themselves and as a community. I think what makes us different is our lack of boundaries and authenticity. This company is our Diamond and we are proud to share it to create and shine other diamonds.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was coming from an abusive relationship that completely stifled my creativity for four years and standing up and deciding it wasn’t enough for me. I could have given up but instead, I CHOSE to express myself the way that I do best, through my music. My single ‘Yellow’ and song on my album called ‘ F*ck Boy’s Dream’ were then born. It’s the one thing that made me decide to receive another day of sunlight and blessings 🌻
