Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Burr.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dylan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I come from a design and advertising background; creating digital ads and animation for large brands like Budweiser, Hyatt, and AutoTrader. I felt compelled to finally buy a good camera after my first daughter was born. I then had a co-worker ask if I could shoot her wedding and I thought it would be a fun challenge, so I agreed. At this point in my life, I had only been to my own wedding. When I gave the final product to her, she and her family were so overjoyed I was hooked and it changed my life. I fell back into love with photography and with weddings in particular.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hahahahaha. No, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. You quickly learn that starting your own business is that I spend 20% photographing and the rest doing marketing, advertising, editing, writing blogs, networking, contracts, taxes, etc. Things I don’t really want to do. I’d rather spend it with my couples; getting to know them more and drawing on that for their images.
When I first started, I would shoot anything anyone wanted to pay for. Through that, I realized I really enjoy weddings the most and I the work I do will have the most impact and purpose. People treasure their wedding photos and I feel a great sense of duty to create the most compelling images I can and capture the real emotion of the day. You can’t do it over and I think I thrive on that.
I’ve goofed up a few things, but in the end, I learned you need to follow your intuition and don’t agree to things you don’t feel 100% confident with. It’s just not worth it.
What else should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in outdoor weddings for couples who have a penchant for letting loose and wandering adventurously.
The thing I am most proud of is that I’ve become close friends with my clients and I hope I created a lasting impact with them and their wedding photos. I don’t consider this “just a job.” They chose me to artfully document the beginning of their lives together. I also love doing family sessions for previous couples and getting to follow them as their families grow.
From a visual standpoint, I would say its the way I see and use light in my photos that sets me apart. I can create my own light but prefer to play with natural light as I feel its the most honest and special. I generally add to and augment the light that is already there. I want it to remain real and only add something to make it better, not create it entirely. On a personal side for what makes me different, is my passion for people and my sense of adventure. I don’t like to fully plan everything. I think you have to leave room for exploration and adventure.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would define success in a number of ways. First, I get to do a job that I really enjoy and drives me to be the best I can at it from a technical point but also the best guide for my couples to connect and capture who they really are together. Second would be the lasting impact and importance my work does for people. Not just documenting the day and their loved ones; but doing it with style, honesty, and love.
