Today we’d like to introduce you to Elaina Rodriguez.
Elaina, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion has always been in the beauty industry ever since I was young. I was the little girl that cut her own hair who became the teenager doing all of her friend’s hair and makeup in high school. I attended beauty school in California where I got my cosmetology license in 2011. I worked part-time in a salon and part-time as a freelance makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics. In 2015, my family and I moved to Colorado where I transferred with MAC as a makeup artist and about six months later, decided to freelance so I can pursue more opportunities behind the chair. I provide hair and makeup services specializing in extensions. I recently branched out my extension services to include custom hair pieces for those with conditions that cannot withstand the weight of traditional hair extensions. In my off time, I can make custom wigs as well. I feel that I can truly boost person confidence- when they look good, they feel good- and I want to extend that to everyone. Currently, I reserve weekends for weddings where I have the opportunity to provide both hair and makeup. People have told me that I had to choose between hair and makeup because you can be a jack of all trades but master of none, however, I feel that keeping up on education, techniques, and trends is what makes me a master. Education is always my priority in the beauty industry and I will never stop learning.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part has been making my services known and building clientele. When we decided to move, I knew I could provide my services anywhere but building a whole new clientele where nobody knows you have been tough. I ask for referrals a lot and have a great referral program, however a lot of my current clients are like me- they just moved here and don’t know anyone.
Please tell us about Lipstick & Scissors Artistry.
I came up with the name Lipstick and Scissors Artistry because I wanted to showcase that I provide both hair and makeup services and of course it’s an art! Not only do I provide makeup services but with the hair, I specialize in hair extensions and custom made hair pieces. I am most proud of the fact that I am constantly keeping up with my education, this year alone I will have attended three conferences/hands-on classes as well as two online courses. Not to mention, I work in an independent salon which also provides education quarterly. I believe my continuing education and ability to provide other options to those with thinning or even no hair is what sets me apart from others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s hard to choose just one favorite memory from my childhood or even pinpoint it. But I would say it’s between summers camping at the beach or movies with the family. They were those events I looked forward to every time and I loved just spending time with my family. To this day we quote lines from a movie so these moments definitely stuck with me.
