Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Nelson.
Elizabeth, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Art class was always my happy place growing up. All the stress from the rest of the day could dissipate with just an hour of painting. My passion for design really started to develop in college, where I majored in Painting and Art History. My studies abroad further opened my eyes to an art world that inspired me to make being creative a career. But being creative doesn’t pay the bills. I knew I needed more in my wheelhouse of skills, so I went on to major in Business Marketing. This addition to my education landed me jobs in marketing, where I quickly learned that marketing isn’t necessarily “artistically creative.”
I needed to find a way to combine my love of business and art. After a lot of soul searching, I realized that Graphic Design would be the avenue I needed to follow and I went back to school for formal training. This is where things really started for me. While I will always love to put a paintbrush to a large canvas, graphic design was my avenue to merging my two passions. I spent two years with an agency working in production design, gathering business skills I am so grateful to have today. I had the privilege of working with national brands, and I was challenged to expand my understanding of marketing through design.
Being from an entrepreneurial family, I was always encouraged and supported to be a business owner. After a lot of soul searching, I went full time with my business, focusing my attention to small businesses who appreciate typography and minimalist design. I have helped over 100 entrepreneurs make their business dreams a reality. There is nothing more rewarding than helping clients walk through the same excitement I had when starting my design business.
Has it been a smooth road?
There’s nothing harder to conquer than imposter syndrome. My first year in business, I only made $10,000 and seriously wondered what the hell I was doing. Getting established and recognized is freaking HARD. Even once things started to build momentum, there was still the rollercoaster ride when some months are amazing and others feel slow. I am still working on trusting that slow periods are normal and how to make the most of my time by investing in my business, both financially and with my time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run a brand and website design business specializing in bringing small businesses to life. I am proud to say I have helped over 100 small business owners grow their businesses through full branding and Squarespace website design. My focus is a minimalist design with a passion for typography. I also specialize in making unique neutral color palates that are dynamic yet clean. I am most proud of the design process I have developed over the years. Because of this established process, client revision requests are extremely low as I have been able to help them to effectively communicate their vision, which I strategically bring to life.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Denver is growing faster than I could have ever imagined. Being a Colorado native, I have seen the traffic grow exponentially every year. Ultimately though, the beauty of starting a business like mine is the ability to work with anyone all over the world.
