Meet Emma Goldman of Collective Lotus in Capital Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Goldman.

Emma, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a child, my mother taught me about spiritual practices and ideologies. I was very fortunate because even at a young age, I was aware that these tools would someday be useful. After university, I started to ask a lot of questions re-examining everything I thought I knew. I began diving into different philosophies, launching my spiritual evolution. I became determined to find skills to heal myself from deep anxiety, OCD, and my racing mind that I had lived with throughout my life. I began reading various spiritual texts around Shamanism, Buddhism, and consciousness. It was during this research that I felt a strong feeling of remembrance, a kind of knowing that all of this knowledge was already within me. This profoundly changed my life path. I felt as if it was now time to re-remember my own essential nature.

I set out on a journey on multiple levels of perception. On the physical level, I studied embodiment and what it meant to actually connect with this body through movement and dance. I also harnessed into my connection with Mother Earth, tuning into the way that cycles live through me and the way that everything on this planet is a mirror for our lives. On a mental level, I dove deep into psychology studies. I obtained a master’s degree in social work and I am now studying to obtain my Ph.D. in Psychology: focusing on consciousness and ritual. On a mythical level, I stepped into the realm of the ceremony. I traveled the world on a great pilgrimage, meeting different healers, taking part in various rituals, and meditating on spiritual sites. It is on this path that I met my mentor, who to this day, plays a profound role in my life. And finally, on the energetic level, I dove into self-healing practices. I studied a shamanic stone medicine practice, which taught me how to face my fears and dive deep into shadow, while at the same time learning how to soar like an eagle and dream new worlds into being.

I now walk a path where I am always sourcing from these four levels of perception: the body, mental/emotional, mythic/imaginative, and the energetic/spiritual. I have been awakened to my calling to be a bridge between intuitive wisdom teaching of the earth and western philosophy/psychology. It is through the embodiment of my own transformation of my wounds that I have learned to support others on their journey to walk the path of their soul’s knowing.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While there have been many experiences to overcome in my life, those that involved deep episodes of anxiety have been the ones that have transformed me on the deepest levels. Each time I have extensive bouts of anxiety, I learn about new aspects of my self. I begin to meet unique parts of my inner being and have the opportunity to support lost parts of my soul. Often, in these times, I have to remember the importance of slowing down, nourishing, and being gentle with myself. There is something profound about honoring exactly where we are, even if it is in the depths of anxiety. I often notice that the moment I meet myself with gratitude, compassion, and love, I begin to harness this energy of anxiety in new creative ways.
